Lesson 5: Communicative Styles

Good communication skills are also important in your everyday life. These
enable you to avoid miscommunication that may lead to conflicts and
problems.
These are different types of communicative styles to help you developed
good communication skills in different situations. These are intimate, casual,
conversational, consultative, and frozen.

• Intimate – the style that you often use with your family, friends, or
loved ones. This does not need complete articulation since there is
already an established style of communication that does not need on
you correct grammar.

• Casual – a personal type of conversation you also use with friends and
family members. This may include conversations over the phone, SMS,
or through social media.

• Conversational – a type of conversation that is casual but needs to be


a little formal since you have to be clear with your message. This does
not apply only to your friends or family members, but to your
classmates, teachers, and other people in your community.

• Consultative – used in some group discussion, conversation at school,


organizations, work place, etc. It has the tendency of having an average
speed. Sentences tend to be shorter and less planned.

• Frozen – the most formal communicative style that is usually used in


formal situations.
