What are the advantages and disadvantages of secondary sources?

The existence of secondary sources plays a significant role in the fields of information and literature, as is the case in the
present, where the functions of secondary sources include preserving knowledge or information from original or primary
sources through the recreation of media, in-depth research using historical subjects as a reference, and improvising the
information’s content into more clear and informative knowledge. In this time when communication is intensifying and
expanding into a large network, information is being updated and improved to make up for the lack of reading
proficiency in the younger generation. As the continuous preservation of information into contemporary times, it also
has advantages and disadvantages of secondary sources that are important to learn about.

B1. Advantages of secondary data sources are relatively simple to obtain. The way secondary research is conducted has
altered as a result of the Internet. It may get a ton of information today by simply clicking the source for the internet.
Hence, using secondary sources is either totally free or really inexpensive. It also saves you time and effort. Secondary
research enables you to collect data without having to put any money on the line, as contrast to primary research, which
requires you to plan and carry out a whole primary study procedure from the outset.

According to Valcheva (2020), advantages of accessing secondary sources were dominantly resides on the internet. Due
to it, it becomes more accessible because of the easy procedure of accessing it by clicking the website you choose as
your reference or sources to obtain information. As the secondary sources floating inside the vast internet, it is also
affordable or inexpensive, means less cost for obtaining the data unlike on primary sources that we need hardly to
acquire due to limited sources.

According to the ACL Research Ethics, A major disadvantage of using secondary data is that it may not answer the
researcher’s specific research questions or contain specific information that the researcher would like to have. Or it may
not have been collected in the geographic region desired, in the years desired, or the specific population that the
researcher is interested in studying. Additionally, to use secondary data is that the researcher/analyst does not know
exactly how the data collection process was done and how well it was done. The researcher is therefore not usually privy
to information about how seriously the data are affected by problems such as low response rate or respondent
misunderstanding of specific survey questions.

Basically mean that sometimes many secondary sources might or probably become unreliable to the researcher due to
unspecified data and alternation by internet, that made for the researcher unsatisfied to their objectives. Thus they’re
more serious about finding more datas without any bias to the information they need to acquire. Moreover, secondary
sources is made derived from the original sources on it, they gathered that data through researching, experimenting,
reporting, and many methods enough to create a difference from the original sources because isn’t the same
researcher/journalist who made content the same as the original source, also isn’t the same intent when it made it.
Thus, it can create biases and misinformation throughout the internet, causing misunderstanding and confusion to its
readers and future researchers.
Based on the result, secondary sources made a huge part of preserving the knowledge of mankind via scientific methods
and qualitative and quantitative research/analysis to improve the quality of information, then it became significantly
useful for society building smart and good lifestyles. As the information in the internet, programmers made the source
keep valid and clear every website, perfect to access easily for the people. On the contrary, secondary sources might
become unreliable due to alteration of the internet and biases creating unspecific or unfavorable data, just enough to
cause misinformation and confusion to those who search for information.

It's best for us to be responsible for looking at some information from any secondary sources we got, especially from the
internet. We should keep analyzing sources we see just for the best quality and validity of the information we need in
order to make sure that it is a big deal to learn about the knowledge of mankind. Also keep the data preserved by
continuously adapting, recreate, or passing down for the future generations. Lastly, we should know that the
information or data are important, and it’s need to remain true to its theme and content, thus it’s need to keep putting
unnecessary information that doesn’t make sense on the data.
