ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS RESULTING FROM IMPLEMENTATION OF
INFRASTRUCTURES IN THE MWENEDZI RIVER VALLEY NA CHIMOIO CITY

he disorderly growth of cities and the occupation of fragile urban land constitute a global
concern. Today, in any part of the world such as Mozambique, one of the problems of cities is
the rapid population growth and the high number of people living in risk areas. or vulnerable
people often without basic living conditions, which generates significant impacts for the
population itself and for the environment.

In the urban centers of Mozambican cities many are the residential areas afflicted by several
factors that characterize informal settlements: social strata with low income, lack of basic
urbanization, ambiguous and insecure land tenure rights, high densities, inappropriate
environmental conditions, low or very low quality of buildings, absence of an urban culture.

In the City of Chimoio, the population occupied and is occupying the valley of the Mwenedzi
river developing various activities in it, such as housing construction, commercial practices,
agriculture, among others, these aspects can result in negative environmental impacts such as
such as water contamination, soil erosion, disease proliferation, among others.

For this the main reason I was researching Assessing the Environmental Impacts resulting from
the implementation of infrastructure (Projects and housing) in the Mwenedzi river valley- city of
Chimoio due to the characteristics of the Mwenedzi river valley, combined with the lack of
financial power for the greater part of its occupants, the living conditions are deplorable mainly
in season rainy season (October to March of each year) being in this way the population and the
ecosystem vulnerable and threatened by various risks

to obtain solutions to these problems, it is necessary to adopt mitigation plans that seek to reverse
partial damage and reduce risk situations and environmental impacts, through intervention in
vulnerable areas and the implementation of operational programs that allow, in the short term, to
mitigate critical situations based on the definition of priorities.
They must be implemented based on adaptive management, based on mechanisms that take into
account the dynamics of certain natural areas. - Keep most of the degraded areas in a state close
to nature; -Prevent occupation with housing in the delimited protection areas; - Condition the
industrial installations after having carried out the study of the local environment; - Diverting
roads and transferring constructions in risk areas; by implementing the mitigation plans, the
damage caused in the mwenedzi valley can be minimized.
