The social environment,  refers to the immediate physical and social setting in which people live or in

which something happens or develops. It includes the culture that the individual was educated or lives in,

Human social environments encompass the immediate physical surroundings, social

relationships, and cultural milieus within which defined groups of people function and interact.

Components of the social environment include built infrastructure; industrial and occupational

structure; labor markets; social and economic processes; wealth; social, human, and health

services; power relations; government; race relations; social inequality; cultural practices; the

arts; religious institutions and practices; and beliefs about place and community. The social

environment subsumes many aspects of the physical environment, given that contemporary

landscapes, water resources, and other natural resources have been at least partially configured

by human social processes. Embedded within contemporary social environments are historical

social and power relations that have become institutionalized over time. Social environments can

be experienced at multiple scales, often simultaneously, including households, kin networks,

neighborhoods, towns and cities, and regions. Social environments are dynamic and change over

time as the result of both internal and external forces.

The social worker understands that humans are social beings, these social creature’s growth and

development need the guidance of nurturing and protection provided by others around them. It’s

this inter-connectedness and interdependence of people in the social environment that is the

foundation of practice in social work as a profession. The environment a person lives in has a lot

to do with how a social worker may apply knowledge and guidance and Social work profession

also focuses on the interaction between humans and their environments. Social worker adopt a

person-in-situation perspective as they help people address problems, needs, and aspirations

associated with three social dimensions life transition, the environment, and obstacles that

impede the successful accomplishment of transitional and environmental tasks.

The important of this topic to a future Social Worker like me we understand people situation, we

can easily address the help because we can determine their needs base on their environment

condition but still we need to assess them to know exactly their status and behavior then analyze

and make a plan for intervention.
