Questions 23 - 28. Read the passage and do the tasks that follow. (1.5 ms)
Every year, the average temperature of the Earth's surface gets a little bit warmer. This gradual trend is
called global warming. Warmer weather may sound nice, but global warming is something to be very concerned
about.
Scientists are worried that continued warmer temperatures could damage the environment in many
devastating ways. Rising temperatures might cause plants and animals to become extinct. They could melt
enough polar ice to cause the levels of the sea to rise. Weather patterns could also change. There might be more
droughts or serious storms with flooding. In some areas, human diseases could spread.
What is causing global warming? Humans are mostly to blame. Pollution from factories and cars add
toxic gases to the air. These gases rise to the Earth's atmosphere. As the sun's rays warm the Earth, the gases
work much like the glass in a greenhouse. They help trap the heat in the atmosphere and make the Earth grow
warmer. That is why they are nicknamed "greenhouse gases".
It is our responsibility to take care of our planet. Global warming is a serious problem with serious
consequences. If we want future generations to enjoy their time on Earth, we must act now!

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or Don your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the following questions.
The phrase “healthy lifestyle” is a definition of how you should live if you want to get the healthiest
body you can- one that both looks good and feels good. You know the obvious behaviors that describe someone
who is healthy and takes care of themselves. A healthy person doesn't smoke, cats healthy foods with plenty of

3
fruits, vegetables and fiber and, of course, exercises regularly. A healthy person also knows how to manage
stress, gets good quality sleep each night, doesn't drink 100 much, doesn't sit too much, does everything in
moderation all the time. When you look at everything that could possibly make a healthy lifestyle, you can see
just how hard all of those things are in our current world.
There is no such thing as a "bad" food, but there are some foods you should try not to have regular basis.
Fast food refers to food that can be prepared and served quickly. It is popular as the food is inexpensive,
convenient, and tastes good. Because fast food is high in sodium, trans fat, and cholesterol. it isn't something you
should cat often.
The good news is you don't have to change everything at the same time. In fact, the trick to healthy living
is making small changes-taking more steps cach day, adding fruit to your cereal, having an extra glass of water,
or saying no to that second helping of buttery mashed potatoes. One thing you can do right now to make your
lifestyle healthier is to move more.

growth in one year, reaching a height of 30 feet. Bananas have a subterranean stem from which come large,
green leaves.
The plant reaches its maturity in about 18 months. As the bunches of bananas mature and the fruit develops,
they can be propped up with poles and covered with blue polyethylene bags. These bags prevent bruising, protect
against the frost and speed ripening by increasing heat and humidity.
Once the banana plant has produced its fruit, the mother plant dies and is replaced by pups sucker plants.
These grow next to the parent and make a new generation of banana plants.

Mercury is the smallest member of the sun's family. It is only 3.100 miles across. It is also the sun's swiftest
planet. Its yearly journey round the sun is only 85 days.Mercury always keeps one side towards the sun. On this
side it is always day, on the other side always night. We only see the lighted side.
Mercury appears to us like a yellowish orange star. The nearest planet to the sun, it is always seen near the
sun, either just before sunrise or soon after sunset. People sometimes call mercury the morning star or evening
star.
Mercury is half the size of the earth. Because it is much lighter, it has much less gravity. If you can visit
Mercury in a spaceship, you will find it a strange world. Its low gravity makes you feel very light. If your weight
on earth is 100 pounds, your weight on Mercury is only 27 pounds.
Looking at the sun from Mercury, you can see that it's much more brilliant than it is seen from the earth. And
the yellow centre of the sun appears three times bigger from Mercury.
On its lighted side, Mercury's temperature is about 300 degrees centigrate. But the dark side is extremely
cold, but 150 degrees below zero so mercury is probably the coldest as well as the hottest of the planets.
STATEMENTS TRUE FALSE
23. We can't see the dark side of Mercury because it is too far for us to see.
24. We can see Mercury just before sunrise or soon after sunset.
25. We weigh much on the Earth than on Mercury because Mercury has got less

Plastic is a material we use every day. The first plastics were made more than 100 years ago from parts of
plants. Plastics are now made from oil, coal and natural gas. We are using up these things so fast that the Earth's
supplies may run out. Because of this, scientists are investigating new ideas for making plastics from plants such
as sweet potato, bamboo and flax.
Things made from plastic can be useful for people but bad for the planet. Some plastics can last for a long
time without wearing out, and can be difficult to get rid of when they are not needed. They can remain in rubbish
dumps for hundreds of years.
Recycling is a good way to solve the problems of unwanted plastics. Recycled waste materials can be
used again to make new products. This can be difficult as different types of plastic need to be recycled in
different ways. Some kinds of plastics can be melted down and used to make new things such as bags and
bottles. Others can be made into fibres for clothing.
Another way to protect the environment is to use canvas bags for shopping instead of plastic ones. A lot
of plastic objects can also be reused. Plastic bottles can be refilled many times, rather than thrown away once
they are empty. Unwanted plastic goods such as CDs and toys can be sold or given away to charity shops.
1. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Plastic effects and solutions to the problem. B. Plastic history and its usefulness.
C. The ways to reduce the harm of plastic. D. Materials that plastic is made of.
2. The phrase "get rid of" in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to
A. remove B. create C. keep D. make

A. they are dangerous to marine life
B. they are very useful for people
C. plastics can remain for a long time without decomposing
D. people reuse plastic objects before recycling them
4. The word "they” in paragraph 4 refers to
A. objects B. canvas bags C. toys D. plastic bottles

Louis Braille was born in France in 1809. His father had a small business. He made shoes and other
things from leather. Louis liked to help his father in the store even when he was very small. One day, at the age
of three, when he was cutting some leather, suddenly the knife slipped and hit him in the eyes. He soon became
completely blind. When he was ten years old, he entered the national institute for the blind in Paris. One day, his
class went to visit a special exhibit by a captain in the army. One thing in the exhibit was very interesting for
Louis. It showed message in code. Armies send messages in secret codes, so no one else can read them. The
captain wrote this code in raised letters on very thick paper. Louis thought a lot about this code. Then he decided
to write in the same way so that the blind could "read" with their fingers. It was very difficult to feel the
differences between raised letters. Instead of letters, Louis used a "cell” of six dots. He arranged the dots with
two dots across and three down. Therefore, blind people can read and write, even write music by Braille.

Online shopping
My name is Sara, and I love shopping online. I prefer mobile phone apps, but sometimes I use my computer.
The phone is more convenient for me, and I can even do my shopping from bed!
I love shopping so much that I buy everything I need at home. I get food, electronics, books, and even large
pieces of furniture like my sofa and bookshelves all online! But I still prefer getting clothes from a store so I can
try them on to be sure they fit me fine.
Yesterday, I bought a birthday present for my mother, and it arrived today! That saves me a lot of time. I am
a very busy person, and I am a little forgetful too. If I think of something I need, then it is wonderful that I can
buy it at that moment.
My friends aren’t as comfortable with buying things online as I am because they think that it can be
dangerous. Of course, bad things sometimes happen, but I am very careful with all of my personal details. I think
the biggest fear that people have with using their credit cards online is that someone will steal their number. It is
important to be sure that the web page is secure. You can see this if the address has got an “s” in it, like https://.
That “s” means it is safe.
