Re-employment of Ancient Egyptian Monuments during

the Islamic Period

Abstract
Since the beginning of the ancient Egyptian history, Egypt had many quarries
for various materials; limestone, sandstone, granite, diorite, basalt and
marble, however to save time and efforts of quarrying hard stones, kings
often used stone blocks from the monuments of earlier kings. This same trend
was conducted by architects after the Arab conquest; they reused local
materials which have once been part of other architecture rather than
quarrying hard stones themselves. They not only used the ancient monuments
as a source of stones for their new buildings, but they also re-employed them
in many purposes different from their original usage. This article will shed
light on some ancient Egyptian monuments that were re-employed in their
original shapes to serve other purposes different from their original usage
during the Islamic period.

Conclusions

The Arabs reusage of ancient Egyptian monuments was not just limited to
dismantling the ancient buildings to use as a source of building materials, but
they took advantage of all types of monuments to be reused for various
purposes totally different from their original one.

‫اعادة توظيف اآلثار المصرية القديمة في العصور اإلسالمية‬

‫المستخلص‬
‫اعتاد العرب على تفكيك اآلثار المصرية القديمة وخاصه اآلثار المتهدمة لتستخدم كمواد للبناء لتوفير‬
‫الجهد والنفقات الالزمة الستخراج مواد البناء من المحاجر‪ ،‬وقاموا بإعادة استخدام األعمدة أيضا ً‬
‫لتدعيم األسقف‪ ،‬فكثيرا ً ما نجد العديد من المباني االسالمية بها أحجار مختلفة األنواع تحتوي على‬
‫كتابات ونقوش قديمة‪ .‬لم يقتصر اعادة استخدام العرب لآلثار المصرية القديمة كمواد للبناء فقط‪،‬‬
‫ولكنهم كانوا يستغلون كافة اآلثار بمختلف أنواعها ألغراض متعددة‪ ،‬فقد اعادوا استخدام بعض اآلثار‬
‫صنعت من أجله مثل استخدام تابوت‬
‫بدون تفكيكها ألغراض تختلف عن استخدامها األصلي التي ُ‬
‫بداخل المسجد ليكون حوض للوضوء بدالً من ان يستخدم لدفن الموتى‪.‬‬
