Question 1
Figure below shows the cross section of a road embankment having the unit weight of
18 kN/m3. There is also a culvert of 0.8 m diameter passes under the embankment. It
is engraved in the soil beneath at depth of 2 m. Calculated the vertical stress induced
at the top of the culvert at point A & B due to loads from embankment.

Ans :

(triangular load) 𝑞 = ½𝛾𝐻 = ½18(3) = 27𝑘𝑁/𝑚2

(strip load) 𝑞 = 𝛾𝐻 = 18(3) = 54𝑘𝑁/𝑚2

Question 2
Two triangular loads each with a width of 4 m transmit a contact pressure of 150 kN/m²
and 100 kN/m² respectively are placed on the horizontal layer of residual soil as shown
in figure below. Solve the value of vertical stress increases due to the combined
triangular loads at Point A, Point B and Point C at the depth of 3 m below the ground
level.
