TYPE OF ART SAMPLE ARTWORK ARTIST SYMBOLIS

M

GREEK ART “APHRODITE OF KNIDOS” PRAXITELE The

S Aphrodite of
Knidos was
commissioned
as the cult
statue for the
Temple of
Aphrodite at
Knidos. It
depicted the
goddess
Aphrodite as
she prepared
for the ritual
bath that
restored her
purity,
discarding her
(4th Century BC) drapery with
one hand,
while
modestly
shielding
herself with
the other.
ROMAN ART “COLUMN OF TRAJAN” EMPEROR A Roman
TRAJAN triumphal
column in
Rome, Italy,
that
commemorate
s Roman
emperor
Trajan's
victory in the
Dacian Wars.
It was
probably
constructed
(AD 107-113) under the
supervision of
the architect
Apollo Dorus
of Damascus
at the order of
the Roman
Senate.

RENAISSANCE “THE LAST SUPPER” LEONARDO Two aspects

ART DA VINCI of the Last
Supper have
been
traditionally
depicted in
Christian art:
Christ's
revelation to
his Apostles
that one of
them will
betray him
and their
reaction to
this
(1495-1498) announcemen
t, and the
institution of
the sacrament
of the
Eucharist with
the
communion
of the
Apostles.

BAROQUE ART “ECSTASY OF SAINT TERESA” GIAN The sculpture

LORENZO portrays the
BERNINI Saint's
overpowering
sense of
spiritual
pleasure in
serving
Christ.
Bernini
employs
imagery
which
suggests
sensual
pleasure, but
(1647-1652) only in order
to convey the
tangible
nature of
Teresa's
experience - a
manifestation
of her love of
God and her
yearning for
spiritual union
with him.

NEOCLASSICIS “THE CORONATION OF JACQUES- This painting

M ART NAPOLEON” LOUIS shows the
DAVID moment that
Napoleon
turned France
back into a
monarchy. He
brought in
Pope Pius VII
from Rome to
bless him at
the event. The
painting is a
fairly accurate
representation
of history, but
not everything
in the painting
is true.
Several
details are
changed to
(December 21, 1805- November 1807) favour
Napoleon.

ROMANTICISM “SPOLIARIUM” JUAN LUNA In Rizal's

ART words,
Spoliarium
was a symbol
of “our social,
moral, and
political life:
humanity
unredeemed,
reason and
aspiration in
open fight
with
prejudice,
(1884) fanaticism,
and injustice.”

REALISM GUSTAVE Depicts two

COURBET ordinary
peasant
workers.
Courbet
painted
without any
apparent
sentiment;
instead, he let
“THE STONE BREAKERS” the image of
the two men,
one too young
for hard
labour and the
other too old,
express the
feelings of
hardship and
exhaustion
that he was
trying to
portray.

(1849)

IMPRESSIONIS “POPPIES” CLAUDE Symbolically,

M MONET the poppy is
an easy
symbol to
find in
funeralia; it
has been in
the popular
lexicon since
the times of
ancient Egypt,
Greece and
Rome.
Simply, the
flower
(1873) represents
peace, rest,
sleep, eternal
sleep,
resurrection
and
consolation
CUBISM “GUERNICA” PABLO Guernica
PICASSO shows the
tragedies of
war and the
suffering it
inflicts upon
individuals,
particularly
innocent
civilians. This
work has
gained a
monumental
status,
(April 26,1937- June 1937) becoming a
perpetual
reminder of
the tragedies
of war, an
anti-war
symbol, and
an
embodiment
of peace.

FUTURISM “PRIMAVERA UMBRIA” GERARDO The

DOTTORI Primavera,
the title of
which means
“Spring”, is
among the
greatest works
at the Uffizi
Museum in
Florence. The
precise
meaning of
the painting is
(1923) unknown, but
it was
probably
created for the
marriage of
Lorenzo di
Pier
Francesco (a
cousin of the
powerful
Lorenzo the
Magnificent
Medici) in
May, 1482.
