U5 Poster: We Are Different Teacher Notes

Fact!
Suggested use: after Lesson 3 (but can be
used after any lesson in the unit, too)
Time: 30 minutes (plus 10 minutes for
extension activities)
The children will:
• Relate what they already know about
describing people to new people and
descriptions.
• Learn about differences and similarities in
family characteristics.
Warm Up: before using the poster
• Tell the children they will look at a poster called We
Are Different. Have the children look around the
class and say what differences they can see among
their classmates – height, hair, eye color, etc.
Procedure: using the poster
• Show the children the poster. Ask: Who do you
think the people are? Are they family or friends?
What clothes, colors, and ages can you see?
• Play the audio. Ask the children if they look more
like their mom, dad, grandparents, etc. Ask if they
look like their brothers/sisters.
Round Up: after using the poster
• Hide the poster and ask Whose …? questions based
on the poster information, e.g. Whose hair is long
and dark? Show the poster again, and have the
children use it to check their answers.
Extension Activities
• Whole class: play the same guessing game
with questions about the children in the class.
Ask a question as an example. Then have the
children continue, first with the whole class
and then in pairs.
• Pairs: have the children write a brief
description of someone they know well – from
their school or a famous person – including
their description and profession. Have them
work with another pair to guess the people.

Sun Hee
• For homework, have the children draw pictures
• Play the audio. Ask the children if Sun Hee and her of their parents or grandparents and label any
mom look similar or different. Ask: How are they similarities with themselves, e.g. My grandfather
different? and I have dark hair. The children share their
• Complete Interactivity 1. pictures in the next class.

Mikhaila
• Play the audio. Have the children say Stop! every
time they hear a describing word, e.g. tall, fair,
short, etc. Point to the people and have the
children name them.

Razi, Emilio, Jessica

• Play the audios for these descriptions. Ask the
children comprehension questions, e.g. Who has
dark hair? Who has blue eyes? Who is with his
sister? etc.
