U2 Poster: Food Inventors Teacher Notes

• Complete Interactivity 1.
Suggested use: after Lesson 8 (but can be
used after any lesson in the unit, too)
Time: 20 minutes (plus 10 minutes for
extension activities)
The children will:
• Expand their knowledge of inventions to food
and drink inventions.
• Learn about the history of everyday food and
drinks.
Warm Up: before using the poster
• Have the children tell you everything they
remember about the different inventions from the
unit.
• Ask the children to distinguish between “invented
foods” and “natural foods.” Give them some
food names and have them tell you “invented” or
“natural”: potatoes / French fries / milk / ice cream /
cocoa / chocolate cake / tomatoes / ketchup / etc.
Procedure: using the poster
• Show the children the poster. Have them tell you
the main items they can see (sandwich, chewing
gum, cola, cornflakes, fridge/freezer, popcorn).
Point to these on the poster and have the children
repeat them.
Note: the children will need to remember
information from each of the texts in order to
complete the interactivities. The procedure below
will help them find and remember it.
• Complete Interactivity 2.
Fact!
• Play the Fact! audio. Ask the children to suggest
what items or objects in the classroom they could
decorate with popcorn.
• Complete Interactivity 3. Play each poster text
again before checking answers.
• Complete Interactivity 4.
Round Up: after using the poster
• Ask the children what their favorite food invention
from the poster is. Which do they think was the
best idea?
Extension Activities
• Whole class: mime the stories. Play each poster
text audio again and have the children act out
what they hear being described. (This could be
done as a review after completing Interactivity
2.)
• Whole class: play “Count the Words.” Have
the children cover their eyes while you play
some key sentences from the poster texts
again. When you stop at the end of the
sentence, have the children raise their hands
to tell you how many words in the sentence.
Check with the poster text.

The Sandwich • Have children make a menu of their favorite

food and drinks. Are they from the children’s

Play the audio and have the children read and
listen for the information (they can take notes in
their notebooks if they wish). Feed back as a whole
class.

Chewing gum, Cola, Cornflakes and Frozen Food

• Groups of four: allocate What food/drink? to the
first group, Who? to the second, Where? to the
third, and When? to the fourth. Play the audio for
the Chewing Gum, Cola, Cornflakes, and Frozen
Food poster texts. Have children listen and read for
their specific information in their groups and feed
back to the class.
