U1 Video: Modern Machines and Me Teacher Notes

• Once the video finishes, ask the following general

Suggested use: after Lessons 4 & 5 (but can
be used after any lesson in the unit, too)
Time: 25 minutes (plus 5 minutes for the
extension activity)
The children will:
• Consolidate what they have learned about
machines used in the home.
• Learn about how some chores were done in
the past before machines.
• Extend what they know about which verbs to
use with which nouns.
Warm Up:
• Ask the children to name modern machines you
can find in the home. If necessary, give them an
example such as dishwasher.
Procedure:
Before watching:
• Elicit different household chores from the children,
for example doing the dishes, and write them on
the board.
• Then elicit which machines they would use to do
each of the chores, for example dishwasher.
While watching:
• First play: Turn the volume off and play the video
all the way through. At the end, ask the children
what machines they saw and what chores Tommy
(the young boy) had to do (washing machine,
vacuum cleaner, microwave; wash clothes, clean up
room, heat milk).
• Second play: Turn the volume on, and play the
video all the way through so the children can check
their answers to the first activity. Tell them to pay
attention, as after the video finishes you will ask a
few questions.

afternoon); Does Tommy want to clean his room?
(no); Who is the milk for? (Tommy’s grandma).

• Third play: You might want to play the video
again so the children can check their answers to

After watching:
• Write these words on the board: clothes,
detergent, mess, chores, and milk. Check what
these words mean, and ask the children what verbs
they could use with each one. See how many ideas
they can come up with.

Round Up:
• Ask the children if they think Tommy’s attitude
towards his chores changed through the video. Ask
which chores they do at home and which of the
machines from the video they sometimes use at
home. Which chores do they like / not like?
Extension Activity
• Pairs: have children think of a chore they have
to do at home and invent a machine that could
help them do the chore quickly.
• Ask the children which of these machines they
think was invented first: washing machine, vacuum
cleaner, microwave. Then ask them to try to find
out when each one was invented. They can report
their findings back to the class.
