U7 Poster: Who Does What?
Teacher Notes
Suggested use: after Lesson 7 (but can be
used after any lesson in the unit, too)
Time: 30 minutes (plus 5 minutes for
extension activities)
The children will:
• Relate what they already know about jobs and
activities to some new professions.
• Learn about some different professions and
the work people do.
Warm Up: before using the poster
• Elicit any jobs the children know how to say in
English. Write them on the board. Ask them what
their favorite job is.
• Ask the children if they know anyone who works
with food, animals, music, children, or computers.
Procedure: using the poster
• Show the children the poster. Elicit what jobs they
can see.
Computer Programmer
• Play the audio. Have the children talk about
Lauren. Ask: Do you think her job is interesting?
• Complete Interactivity 1.
Fashion Designer, Astronaut, Music Producer
• Play the audios for these professions. Ask the
children: What does Hannah / Sergei / Steve do?
Which job do you like?
• Complete Interactivity 2.
Teacher
• Play the audio. Ask the children how many
teachers they have. Ask: Do you think a teacher
has an important job? What do you like doing at
school?

Firefighter, Chef, Vet
• Play the audios for these professions. Have
the children say Stop! every time they hear a
profession or a place. Ask the children: Who works
at an animal hospital? / at the fire station? / in a
restaurant?
• Complete Interactivity 3.

Fact!
• Play the audio. Ask the children if they go to see
a children’s doctor or a family doctor when they
are sick. Ask: Do you think a children’s doctor has
an important job? Do you like going to see the
doctor?
• Ask the children what they think is the best job –
to make things or to help people?
Round Up: after using the poster
• Show the children the poster again, and have the
children name all the jobs shown. Take a class vote
(raise hands) to see which is the favorite job on the
poster. Ask: What job do you want when you are
older?
Extension Activities
• Small groups: play a mime game. Have the
children act out doing one of the jobs. Their
friends have to guess which job they are
miming.
• Pairs: play “Back to the Board.” Have one
child sit with their back to the board, facing
their partner. Write a job on the board, and
have the child facing the board describe the
job for their partner to guess, e.g. She works
in a school (teacher).
• Have the children ask their older family members
about their jobs and if they like them. Have them
discover how to say the jobs in English. Invite them
to share their information in the next class. Ask the
children if they want to do the same jobs as their
family members.
