U2 Poster: A Day in Our Town
Museum, Park
Suggested use: after Lesson 4 (but can be
used after any lesson in the unit, too)
Time: 30 minutes (plus 10 minutes for
extension activities)
The children will:
• Relate what they already know about places
and activities in the town to new places and
activities in a different town.
• Learn about new place names, activities that
happen there, and the times they happen.
Warm Up: before using the poster
• Ask the children what their favorite places are in
their town. Ask: What do you like to do there?
Procedure: using the poster
• Show the children the poster. Ask them what
different places they can see. Ask: Where would
you most like to go?
School
• Play the audio. Ask the children if they go home
at the same time as these children. Ask: What are
your favorite activities at school?
Soccer Stadium, Bakery, Toy Store
• Play the audios for these places. Have the children
say Stop! every time they hear a place. Ask
comprehension and personalization questions, e.g.:
What do people do in these places? Do you go to a
local stadium or park? Why do children like the toy
store? When do they usually go there?

Teacher Notes
• Play the audios for these places. Ask the children if
they like museums. Elicit examples of things they
can see there. Ask them if they go to a park near
their house or school. Elicit what they do there.

• Ask the children how many clocks they can see in
the poster (two). Ask: Do they say the same time?
(no); What time does the first clock say? (half past
one/1:30); Where are the children at half past one?
(at school).

Fact!
• Ask the children if they know why the day is longer
on Mars (Mars takes more time to rotate than the
Earth). Ask: Is more time in the day a good thing?

Round Up: after using the poster
• Ask the children if they can find all these places in
their town. Ask which place they would like to go
to now. Take a class vote (raise hands).
Extension Activities
• Designate and label different parts of the
classroom as places in the town. Call out
instructions: You want to buy some bread!
You want to play with toys! The children have
to run to the correct part of the room.
• Have the children draw a picture of their
favorite place in the town and what they like
to do there.
• Draw two columns on the board with the headings
Old places and New places. Have the children ask
older members of their family what places are old
and new in their town/area. Have them share what
they discover in the next class.
