The exceeding numbers of HIV cases in an average day is not new in the Philippines.

It is one of the
serious problems that our country had been facing and battling for the past 2 decades up to now. This
disease became very alarming to people and society which results to discrimination and criticisms to
infected people. HIV infection is a worldwide struggle not just in the Philippines but to the other
countries as well because this disease doesn’t have any cure or antidote to rehabilitate it. It can be
eliminated through treatments however it cannot guarantee that a person with HIV infection would heal
perfectly.

According to this article, the main causes of the increase in HIV cases in our country are the following:

Unprotected sexual intercourse of male to male and male to female—one of the causes of HIV
transmission is through engaging in sexual intercourse. The exchange of body fluids such as saliva,
semen, and vaginal fluids can also cause the HIV disease to be transferred to other people’s bodies. A
person is at risk of contacting HIV if they have unprotected sexual intercourse without the use of a
condom or other barrier.

Sharing of infected needle- Sharing infected needles can spread infection, particularly if one of the
recipients is HIV positive. The disease could spread as a result of the blood from the needle getting into
your tissues.

Mother-to-child transmission- If the mother has HIV, there may be a risk of transmission. Due to the
fact that blood and breastmilk can both contribute to the spread of an infection, the transmission can
take place during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding.

The other transmission may take place through the use of public amenities such as restrooms,
swimming pools, and drinking fountain. This can also be transferred through beddings, towels, utensils,
and telephones.

This article is an eye opener to all of us. It reminds us that we must be careful and mindful of our
movements. This epidemic can cause too much burden not just on our physical health but on our mental
as well as existential wellness.
