Garbage Problem

1. What was the observation of Poss about the garbage problem? What was his solution to this
problem?

Jim Poss observed that there was disturbance on Boston's streets due to the garbage
truck that was employed for trash collection. The litter wasn't fully cleaned up and removed
despite all the issues it caused. He thinks we can improve on this by coming up with a way to
prevent this kind of environmental disturbance.

With his thorough research, he learned that using this vehicle requires a huge
consumption of fuel, which could lead to a shortage of coal in the future and contribute to
pollution by pouring out heavy smoke. To eliminate this, he suggested the reduction of trash
collection, which explains that the trash does not need to be collected more often. In this way,
we could reduce the collection cost as well as its pollution. It also stated that it can prevent the
reptacles from overflowing, which would result in less litter on the street.

By this means, Poss and his team decided to apply the solar technology they used in
their work to create an invention that can help solve the current problems in society. They
created an invention called “The Big Belly” where it doesn’t need electricity to perform its
practice, which became the biggest advantage of all the environmentally friendly innovations.
This invention of theirs can hold up to five times more trash than traditional reptacles.

As a result, it decreases the frequency of trash collection and lessens fuel use and trash
vehicle emissions.

2. What particular habit in the entrepreneur was used by Poss in this situation?

From what Poss did, he possessed the habit of "creativity," where he has the ability to
observe the world in different ways, discover unforeseen patterns, make associations between
apparently unconnected phenomena, and produce solutions. Poss is open to experiments and new
opportunities, despite the mistakes and failures he might commit. He used his imagination to link his
expertise in solar technology and connect his ideas with others in his community and other
networks.

3. Given the chance, with the same garbage problem here in the Philippines how will you solve it
the entrepreneurial way?

The garbage we produce doubles not only twice but also triples as our population develops
at a quicker rate. Garbage disposal is one of the most serious problems faced by most countries in
the world, including the Philippines. One of the factors that we consider as a solution is the recycling
of trash, which we produce by converting it into packaging for storage.

Sustainable packaging refers to the sourcing, development, and use of packaging solutions
that have minimal environmental impact and footprint. It is earth-friendly and doesn’t contribute to
the further depletion of natural resources. With these, we can minimize the use of toxic waste that
can harm our ecosystem. It also helps businesses save money on their packaging materials and helps
consumers avoid unnecessary trash, especially plastic packaging.
