SAFETY ADVICES

2 Safety advices
DANGER Hazardous voltages. Risk of electric shock!
Equipment might be connected to high voltages and can cause an electric
shock when incorrectly installed.
→ If a stationary battery is used as local power supply, the charging unit
must have a safety insulation acc. EN 60950-1.
→ If an AC/DC power supply is used instead of a stationary battery, this
must also provide a safety insulation acc. EN 60950-1.
→ Before manipulating anything at the device switch off the power sup-
ply.

CAUTION Hazardous electric currents. Risk of flashover and electric shock!

When interrupting the power supply electric currents can cause a flashover
and an electric shock.
→ The positive (+) terminal of the local power supply must be connected
to earth. The negative (-) terminal of the local power supply must be
protected with a thermal-magnetic circuit breaker. The applicable cir-
cuit breaker current rating is specified in the installation user guide of
the FOX subrack.
Attention to proper earthing. Risk of electric shock!
CAUTION
Equipment that is not properly connected to earth poses a high risk for an
electric shock when touching metallic surfaces.
→ Pay attention to proper earthing.
→ The subrack must be connected via the rack with the protective earth!
The plus (+) pole of the local power supply must be connected to
earth. The minus (-) pole of the local power supply must be protected
with a thermal-magnetic circuit breaker. The subracks may only be
connected to a switchable power voltage.

CAUTION Laser radiation harmful for eyes!

Laser radiation may be harmful for eyes. The optical fibres emit laser light of
a Class 3 laser which may be harmful for eyes, especially if looked at with
focussing equipment (magnifying lenses, glasses, etc.)
→ Do not look into the optical fibre which carries optical signals.

CAUTION Hazardous voltages. Risk of electric shock!

Electrostatic discharges may pose a risk for injuries when not properly dis-
charged before touching any equipment or components.
→ To protect yourself you must discharge any static charge from your
person before touching any unit or any components.
→ Wear a grounded, anti-ESD wrist-band when working with the hard-
ware.

SAFETY ADVICES

CAUTION Equipment has a high power dissipation. Insufficient ventilation causes hot
spots and overheating on the equipment. Overheating holds a high risk for
injuries when touching hot parts.
→ Do not touch components of units that have been plugged out of the
subrack while in operation.
→ A sufficient ventilation or cooling and ventilation must be provided by
the operator for the racks or subracks that guarantees for a maximum
ambient temperature of 60° C.

NOTICE Attention to temperature range.

range! Risk of equipment damage!
Equipment has a high power dissipation. Insufficient ventilation causes hot
spots and overheating on the equipment. Overheating holds a high risk for
damage of the equipment.
→ Attention to temperature range. Do not operate the equipment in ambi-
ent conditions that are beyond its specification.
→ A sufficient ventilation or cooling and ventilation must be provided by
the operator for the racks or subracks that guarantees for a maximum
ambient temperature of 60° C.

NOTICE Electrostatic discharges. Risk of equipment damage!

Electrostatic discharges may damage your equipment when you are touch-
ing or closely approaching equipment, connectors, or components mounted
on printed circuit boards. To protect your equipment you must discharge any
static charge from your person before touching any unit or any components.
→ Wear a grounded, anti-ESD wrist-band when working with the hard-
ware.

NOTICE Attention to access control. Risk of equipment damage!

Unrestricted access to equipment premises hold a risk of damaged equip-
ment and disrupted services.
→ The subrack should only be installed in locations with restricted
access.

NOTICE Degrading or breaking of optical fibre with loss of communication link!

Excessive bending of optical fibres and ignoring the minimum bending radius
of 15mm will cause degrading or breaking of the optical fibre with loss of
communication link.
→ Do not bend or press optical fibres.
→ Always keep at least the minimum bending radius.

NOTICE Degrading or breaking of optical fibre with loss of communication link!

Danger of damaging optical fibres when using other than FOX ED cover for
subrack. For certain service units the ordinary FOX SD cover is not deep
enough to house optical fibres but excessively bends the optical fibres.
→ Install FOX ED cover when requested in a unit’s documentation -
replace possibly installed FOX SD cover.
