TROPICAL ZONE

BY GROUP 4
▪ Characteristic of a region or climate that
WHAT DOES is frost-free with temperatures high
TROPICAL enough to support year-round plant
MEAN? growth given sufficient moisture.
▪ The tropical zone (tropai heliou sun
turning areas) is the warmest climate
zone of the Earth.

WHAT IS THE ▪ Tropical zones are hot, humid, and rainy

climates found mostly between the tropic
TROPICAL of Cancer and the tropic of Capricorn. As
ZONE? described by Köppen, the four main
types of tropical climates are tropical
rainforest, tropical monsoon climate,
tropical savanna (dry winter), and tropical
savanna (dry summer).
▪ Tropical climate is the first of the five
major climate groups in the Köppen
climate classification identified with the
letter A. They were defined by a monthly
average temperature of 18 °C (64.4 °F) or
higher in the coolest month, and feature
DESCRIPTION hot temperatures all year-round.

▪ The tropics include the Equator and parts

of North America, South America, Africa,
Asia, and Australia. The tropics account
for 36 percent of Earth's landmass
▪ The amount of rain can vary greatly from
one area of the tropics to another. Some
areas, like parts of the Amazon Basin in
South America, get almost three meters
DESCRIPTION (nine feet) of rain per year. Other areas in
the tropics have a drier climate. The
Sahara Desert in northern Africa only gets
two to 10 centimeters (0.79 to 3.9 inches)
of rain per year.
WHAT ARE THE
CHARACTERISTICS ▪ Wet (rainy / monsoon) season.
OF THE SEASONS ▪ Dry season.

TYPES OF THE
TROPICAL ▪ Tropical savanna (dry winter)
CLIMATE? ▪ Tropical savanna (dry summer)
▪ The rainforest biome remains warm all
year and must stay frost-free. The average
daily temperatures range from 20°C
TROPICAL (68°F) to 25°C (77°F). Precipitation
rainforests receive the most rain of all of
RAINFOREST:- the biomes in a year. A typical year sees
2,000 to 10,000 millimeters (79 to 394
inches) of rain per year.
TROPICAL
RAINFOREST:-
▪ The average monthly temperature of the monsoon
tropical climate is above 18°C, and it has two
seasons : dry and rainy, like the tropical savannah
TROPICAL climate. The driest month has precipitation less
than 60 mm. The tropical monsoon climate is
MONSOON:- common in South and Central America, Africa
(West and Central Africa), and also includes the
Caribbean and North America.
TROPICAL
MONSOON:-
▪ A tropical wet and dry climate predominates in areas
covered by savanna growth. Mean monthly
temperatures are at or above 64° F and annual
precipitation averages between 30 and 50 inches. For at
least five months of the year, during the dry season, less
than 4 inches a month are received. The dry season is
associated with the low sun period. Tropical Savanna is
a tropical climate sub-type that corresponds to the
TROPICAL Köppen climate classification categories Aw (for a dry
SAVANNAS:- "winter") and As (for a dry "summer"). The driest month
has less than 60 mm (2.4 in) of precipitation. In tropical
savanna climates, the dry season can become severe,
and often drought conditions prevail during the course
of the year. Tropical savanna climates often feature tree-
studded grasslands due to its dryness, rather than thick
jungle. It is this widespread occurrence of tall, coarse
grass (called savanna).

▪ Avoid heat gain.
WHAT ARE THE ▪ Orient the building to reduce exposure to midday sun,
MAIN PRINCIPLES particularly summer sun.
OF PASSIVE DESIGN ▪ Use materials with low thermal mass (as a general rule).
FOR BUILDINGS IN ▪ Shade walls and windows, particularly any walls with
THE TROPICS? high thermal mass.
Example

TRESNO HOUSE
INDONESIA
• Tresno is the design of a simple tropical house in
Jakarta
• It’s simultaneously designed by the Geomancy
principle creating 9 squares of the grid which
forbids and allows some functions in the zoning
The orientation of the sunlight is studied so the exposure is minimum from the west side facade by
having a solid wall and minimum opening
At the center of the house, there is a
skylight design based on the elaboration
of the Tumpang Sari technique

Basically it is a way to provide air stacking

effect to cool the inside atrium space. The
atrium connects bedrooms, kitchen, living
room. Tumpang Sari is a form of
