Introduction
Welcome to The Story of Tarot: A Modern Phrasal
Approach to Learning Card Meanings!

The Modern Phrasal approach is a novel method

of learning tarot. It queers older card meanings by
applying them to a wider context of human life. Each
phrase is built for modern concerns, attention spans,
and situations.

I developed the Modern Phrasal Approach during my

twenty-one years of tarot study. I am a third generation
seer. My clairvoyant teachers were my mother and
grandparents. Temperance Queer Tarot, my social
justice tarot service, has been in operation for the past
eleven years.

The Modern Phrasal Approach also comes out of

my lifelong work as a poet. I hold an MFA in Creative
Writing from Columbia University. SLINGSHOT, my
first book of poems, won several awards. This success
allowed me to grace stages throughout the United
States. It also reminded me of the importance of the
phrase to language.

The primacy of the phrase is what poetry understands

better than all other forms of writing. The Modern
Phrasal Approach combines tarot, storytelling, and
poetry to paint a picture of possible futures.

You may notice that there are no reversed card

meanings. This is because the reader is intended to

read reverse as a return to the unlearned lessons of
the previous card. That is the best method of reversal
reading for this system. Of course, you may elect not to
read reversals at all.

How to Use this

Guide
1. Keep a Tarot Journal– A tarot journal helps you
build upon each reading you give yourself. This
method enables you to reference the meanings
you found in the past to help you understand
your cards in the present.

2. Read Yourself Everyday – Reading your own

cards regularly is essential if you want your
intuition to grow and shine through. Practice
makes progress.

3. Document Words, Phrases, and

Combinations – The information that comes to
you while you’re doing simple spreads will be the
backbone of your tarot practice. I suggest you
write them down somewhere you’ll see a lot, like
the notes section of your phone, in addition to
your tarot journal!
