1) Define surveillance
Surveillance is the use of IT to monitor the actions of
people.

For example, monitoring may be used to track, record


and assess employees’ performance.

It can be used to support claims for promotion or to


ensure that employees follow the organization’s internet
policy appropriately.

2) Outline IT tools that could be used to monitor users


(business and employment, education, environment,
health, home and leisure, politics and governments)
 Proxy – To prevent illegal access for the network
 Web sense – To filter the websites in the company
 Special monitoring software to keep track of users’
activities
 CCTV (Closed-Circuit TV)
 Tags (use infrared radio system)
 Probes: smart circuits planted inside the body of
humans or animals.
 Sensors: smart circuits to control machines and
devices.

 Log files to monitor the activities of people in servers


 Cookies to follow the private information that is used
in websites (user name and passwords)
 Browsing history
