10 Standards and Protocols

1) Define standards
Standards and protocols are technical rules and conventions that
enable compatibility and therefore facilitate communication
between different IT systems and their components.

Protocol is a standard that is used for exchanging data over

networks. Ex. HTTP, WWW, FTP, SMTP

They might govern the design and use of hardware, software and
information. For example:

 Communication protocols used on the internet (TCP/IP)

 ASCII representations for characters

 The design of the ports on a personal computer

The features of hardware/software components which allow these
components to communicate with each other.
Ex. USB port, mouse port, …
Ex. Operating systems (Windows, Mac, Android, iOS)
2) Describe the types of standards.
- Formal standards: official standard by international bodies (Mac
OS, TCP/IP, http,…)
- De facto standard: it becomes a standard because of society use
and push (Windows)
