The Straw, the Coal, and the Bean

There lived in a certain village a poor old woman who had collected a mess of beans, and was going
to cook them. So she made a fire on her hearth, and, in order to make it burn better, she put in a
handful of straw. When the beans began to bubble in the pot, one of them fell out and lay, never
noticed, near a straw which was already there; soon a red-hot coal jumped out of the fire and joined
the pair. The straw began first, and said, "Dear friends, how do you come here?" The coal answered,
"I jumped out of the fire by great good luck. I should have been burned to ashes." The bean said, "I
too have come out of it with a whole skin. I should have been cooked like my comrades." "Luckily I
managed to slip through her fingers." Straw said. "What had we better do now?" said the coal. "I
think," answered the bean, "that as we have been lucky as to escape with our lives, we will go together
into foreign lands." The proposal pleased the two others, and they started on their travels. Soon they
came to a little brook, and as there was no bridge. The straw was struck with a good idea, and said,
"I will lay myself across, so that you can go over me as if were a bridge!" So the straw stretched him
from one bank to the other, and the coal, quickly trotted up to go over the newly-made bridge. When,
however, she reached the middle, and heard the water rushing past beneath her, she was stopped,
and could get no farther. So the straw began to get burnt, broke in two pieces, and fell in the brook,
and the coal slipped down, hissing as she touched the water. The bean, who had prudently remained
behind on the bank, went on laughing so excessively that she burst and now would she certainly have
been undone forever, if a tailor on his travels had not by good luck stopped to rest himself by the
brook. He took out needle and thread and stitched her together again. The bean thanked him, but as
he had sewn her up with black stitches, all beans since then have a black seam.

The Town Clock

Our mayor is always raising money for one cause or another, but he has never managed to get
enough money to have the town clock repaired. The big clock, which used to strike the hours day
and night was damaged during the war and has been silent ever since. One night, however, our
mayor woke up with a start: the clock was striking the hours! Looking at his watch, he saw that it
was one o'clock, but the bell struck thirteen times before it stopped. Armed with a torch, the
vicar went up into the clock tower to see what was going on. In the torchlight, he caught sight of
a figure whom he immediately recognized as Bill Wilkins, our local grocer. 'Whatever are you
doing up here Bill? asked the mayor in surprise. I'm trying to repair the bell,' answered Bill. "I've
been coming up here night after night for weeks now. You see, I was hoping to give you a
surprise." "You certainly did give me a surprise!" said the mayor. "You've probably woken up
everyone in the village as well. Still, I am glad the bell is working again. That's the trouble, mayor,
answered Bill. It's working all right, but I'm afraid that at one o'clock it will strike thirteen times
and there's nothing I can do about it." "We'll get used to that Bill,' said the mayor. Thirteen is not
as good as one, but it's better than nothing. Now let's go downstairs and have a cup of tea."

Read and summarize the passage below.

Many people suffer from back problems nowadays. This can be prevented if people avoid bad
habits that can lead to back strain.
Some of us tend to bend our backs when we want to pick something up from the floor. We should
never do this. Always bend your knees instead. It is also advisable to keep heavy loads as c lose
to your body as possible. You should change your standing position often, if you are standing for
a long time. It is best to shift your weight regularly so as to avoid any strain.
When you lift heavy loads, you should not bend forward at the waist. Do not lift loads above your
shoulder level as this will put a strain on your spine. Try not to slump when you sit. Always sit
with your back straight. Avoid sitting too far from the table so that you do not have to lean
forward to do your work.
If we treat our backs with respect, we will not suffer from backaches. Avoid doing things that can
lead to back strain.
