MANUFACTURING RAILWAY RAILS

NCR DATA & TRAIN ROLL OUT

3
How are railway rails manufactured?
RAILS MANUFACTURED are made in three steps:
• forming by hot rolling,
• heat treatment, and
• roller straightening .

First, steel blooms are shaped into rails. ... Residual

stresses in rails leaving the mill are introduced
during the heat treatment and the roller
straightening processes.
What material are railroad rails
made from?
• Modern track typically uses hot-rolled
steel with a profile of an asymmetrical
rounded I-beam. Unlike some other uses of
iron and steel, railway rails are subject to very
high stresses and have to be made of very
high-quality steel alloy.

Track Structure

The track on a railway (non-US) or railroad (US), also

known as the permanent way, is the structure consisting of
the :-
• Rails,
• Fasteners,
• Sleepers And
• Ballast (Or Slab Track),
• Plus The Underlying Subgrade.

Structure
• Traditional track structure

• Ballastless track
Ballasted Track
Advantages
• Ballasted track requires low investment cost.
• Ballasted track is usually easy to lay.
• Ballasted track has good drainage performance.

Disadvantages
• Train run on the ballasted track with banged sound and low speed. so
that, passengers may feel uncomfortable.
• Ballasted track is easy to be deformed.
• Ballasted bed requires frequent and costly maintenance.
• Train speed is limited on the ballasted track.
• Ballasted track has poor life expectation (about 15-20yrs).
• Ballasted track produce more pollution by releasing dust from ballast.
• Ballasted track has higher noise level than non-ballasted track. It is
necessary to take effective noise reduction measures.
Ballastless track
Advantages
• Non-ballasted track need less maintenance, save cost.
• Non-ballasted track can reduce dust and beautify the environment.
• Non-ballasted track has great ride performance and stability.
• Non-ballasted track has long durability and service life (about 50-60yrs).
• Non-ballasted track has high train speed and make passengers feel
comfortable.

Disadvantages
• Non-ballasted need more investment cost than ballasted track.
• Non-ballasted track cannot be laid in some area like clay deep cutting,
soft dirt road and earthquake area.
• The most serious drawback of non-ballasted track is that possibilities for
improvement are limited.
Rail

• Modern track typically uses hot-rolled steel

with a profile of an asymmetrical rounded I-
beam. Made of iron and steel, railway rails are
subject to very high stresses and have to be
made of very high-quality steel alloy
• What size are railroad rails?
The standard American rail section has a length
of 12 metres (39 feet). Some ore mining
railroads in Western Australia employ rail
weighing about 68 kg per metre (about 136
pounds per yard). One of the most important
developments is the welding of standard rails
into long lengths.
• What UIC 60?
UIC60 means 60kg steel rail specified by UIC standard.
UIC54 means 54 kg steel rail specified by UIC standard.

• What is the meaning of 60 kg rail?

This is a standard UIC rail section, used in many

countries of the World. The rail section has been
designed for speed upto 160 kmph and traffic density of
about 60 GMT. It is having cross sectional area of 7686
Sq.mm.
• What is a UIC 54 rail?
• UIC54 Steel Rail Description:

It is used for railroad construction. This is a

type T section rail (flat botom rails) with a
54,77kg mass per meter. For a standard track
is used the 54E1/UIC54 rail for medium and
heavy load traffic.
Rail weights and sizes
• Two commonly used rail profiles: a heavily
worn 50-kg/m profile and a new 60-kg/m
profile
• The weight of a rail per length is an important
factor in determining rail strength and
hence axleloads and speeds.
How is railing weight calculated?

Following is the rule used for determining the maximum

axle load of a given rail section. Maximum axle load =
512 * Weight of rail section in kg per meter or Ibs per
yard.

In this case, the weight of the rail section will be 45 kg

per meter. Hence, the maximum axle load = 512 * 45 =
23040 kg = 23.04 tonnes.

contact geometry
The axle load remains the same, but the load borne by the individual wheels is
reduced by having more contact area (more wheels, larger tires, lower tire
pressure) to distribute the load
