Below are two images of the transformer for a water pump. The IR image shows a
temperature differential of 117ºF above the other connections on the same transformer
(see SP3). The maintenance crew disconnected the incoming power and disassembled the
connection during routine maintenance. The connector showed evidence of severe arc
damage between the contacting surfaces.

The IR image below illustrates a primary transformer with a connection that indicates a
temperature differential of 35ºF above the other connections on the same transformer (see
SP3). At the end of the day, the maintenance crew disconnected the incoming power to
the plant and disassembled the highlighted connection to find that it had been arcing
between the contact surfaces, which caused the temperature rise. This prevented a service
disruption and possible transformer failure.
