INTRODUCTION

In the video, “Bournvita, the Exam Collection”, we find that in a

clothes outlet there is only 1 colour of shirt – Black with only 1 size available –
XL. As one would think in such scenario, all the customers entering the
showroom were shocked and amused, and wished to speak to the manager of
the outlet. To add to their confusions, young kids come in front of the customers
to answer their queries.

The kids, who act as managers, in reply question all the customers
who are annoyed to see only black shirts and are deprived of choices, as to why
are they forced to pursue the careers which are not of their interests. The kids
emphasize on the importance of freedom of choosing their careers and stop
comparing them to their peers.

In this review we will look at the importance of freedom of

choosing careers, focus on the careership theory brought about by Phil
Hodkinson and Andrew Sparkes and finally we look at the reasons why the
youngsters are not given the freedom by their family members to pursue what
they wish too.
FREEDOM TO CHOOSE A CAREER

Career takes up a significant part in one’s life. A profession

chooses your way of life. It decides your social impact. It chooses the
abundance, wellbeing and, most importantly, the joy for the remainder of your
life.

In a country like India, which is hugely populated, there is a stiff

competition for employment in all the fields of life. Only a handful of these jobs
are given a go ahead by the family and society at large, which further adds to
the troubles of already pressurized youngsters. There has been fair amount on
discussions on importance of following our passion and giving our best shot to
pursue those dreams as our career, but the fact that those discussions haven’t
been put into effect is a tough pill to swallow.
THE CAREERSHIP THEORY

Phil Hodkinson and Andrew Sparkes, framed the renowned

Careership Theory. The central idea in Careership theory is that career decision-
making and progression take place in the interactions between the person and
the fields they inhabit. Thus, career decision-making and progression are
bounded by a person’s ‘horizons for action’.

Phil and Sparkes focussed on places in order to choose their

careers. The three major roles by which place plays an important factor
according to the Careership theory are-:

1. The labour market – real-time options and awareness of options

2. “Habitus” of rural areas – habitual patterns of behaviour & associated
values
3. “Home” is a resource base – friends and family

For rural / remote young people migration is part of career decision

making. Comfort with migration depends on:

1. Personal history
2. Friend and family ‘networks’
3. Confidence / motivation
STRUGGLES IN FREEDOM TO CHOOSE
CAREERS

As mentioned in the initial phase of the review the words of freedom,

flexibility, opportunity regarding choosing a career have been in talks for years
but have not been put into action in most families in the nation. Some of the
reasons of families not agreeing to the demands of their kids to choose their
own careers are-:

 Money-:
Not every field in our country gives high packages to their
employees. The field which gives a huge amount of money and
proportionally provides stability in your life is most sought. Various types
of engineering are the go-to jobs for most of the middle-class families and
force their children to get into these fields only.

 Affordability-:
There are a few jobs which require a lot of money to be
invested on. Doctor, pilot and few sporting activities are some of them.
Most of the families being middle class or lower middle class cannot
afford to complete the dreams which their kids imagine and in most cases
are not in a position are not in case or fear from taking the riskier options
of loans.

 Professional Dominion-:

Professional Dominion is the phenomenon of

child continuing the profession of his parent/ guardian. Most of the
families in India, want their younger ones to find jobs in the fields which
they have been a part of. This would instil confidence in them, that their
children are on the right path and have a secure future.

 Society-:
Last, but not the least comes society. The relatives and
extended family also play a part in the career chosen by many youngsters
of India. Parents always keep in mind what the people close to them think
or opine about their kids’ career and decide the future of their kids
accordingly and always feel that they must not give anyone a chance to
speak ill about the career chosen or the position their kids possess.
CONCLUSION-:

From the above analysis, we all can agree that the idea of freedom
to choose a career is still not fancied by many families in India. The reasons
which were mentioned above can be right as well as wrong depending upon the
lens you see the situation with.

No parent would ever want his/ her child to ever face problems
regarding his professional life. They are always worried about the future of their
career and always want them to settle down as early as possible. Thus, they
wish their kids to join professions which are tried and tested and give optimum
output, there in providing stability.

Thus, I conclude that, it is important to have freedom to choose your

own career, because it is only you who is to work at the job. But when you
choose your own profession, the things that you need to keep in mind are, what
are the chances of tasting success in that particular profession, are you putting
something extra into your work which others don’t, how much important is that
profession to you and finally, how focussed and hardworking you are towards
your goal.

If u tick the above points, and manage to convince your family

logically, and also have a back up option in case your Plan A doesn’t achieve
what you wanted, then you really deserve a chance to choose a career which
you wish to pursue.
