South Africa Policy Paper

Although South Africa does not want to take any Afghan refugees into their country, they

still want to help the people of Afghanistan. South Africa wants to propose that the more better

off countries in the UN take the refugees.

Due to the economic crisis in South Africa, many of the people there are living below the

poverty line. South Africa is not in a position to take Afghanistan refugees because they are

having problems themselves. One example of this was in an Africa News article which states

“South Africa said Wednesday that it is "not in a position" to host Afghan refugees who fled the

country after the Taliban took control of Kabul on August 15” (Africa News ). South Africa

believes that the first country the asylum seekers go to, is where they should stay. It is mentioned

in the article from saffarzzi. “However, despite this concerted effort made by the organization,

South Africa firmly stood by its decision to revoke access to the refugees on the basis that “in

terms of International law, the country of first reception, which offers the haven to persons

seeking asylum and refugee status, should process those individuals.”(Sicetsha 1)

South Africa cannot financially support anymore people. South Africa suggests that

bigger countries such as the U.S or U.K take them. If that cannot happen then i suggest pakistan

take them because it is the first country they will go to. Our allies Russia and China could also

help out and take them. But we have too many people below the poverty line and suffering to be

worrying about other countries.
