This ONE (1) question is compulsory and must be attempted.

Question 1

Encouraging agriculture and development for mass tourism has led to environmental problems in
Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. Local environmentalists said that it’s no surprise to see landslides
hitting several areas in Cameron Highlands because of over-development and old infrastructures.
Cameron Highlands, Pahang, was hit by landslides on Monday (23 November 2021), affecting
several populated areas, including Sungai Palas, Brinchang and Tanah Rata. Rampant development
and land clearing have significantly altered the land cover of Cameron Highlands for the past
30 years. Sensitive highlands areas are prone to landslides and soil erosion, contributing to the main
water pollution issues in the river system network, sedimentation, and siltation. The landslide was at
its worst on the 28th-mile marker (Batu 28) on the Tapah road there. More than 12 incidences of
landslides and uprooted trees today, leaving one man injured. The landslides occurred following two
hours of heavy rain at 2 pm. Cameron Highlands Fire and Rescue Department chief Zulraime Seman
said a car was severely damaged when several trees fell on top of it near a hotel in Tanah Rata.
Cameron Highlands Regional Environmental Awareness (REACH) President Dilip Martin told TRP
that the landslides occurred following heavy rain that lasted for more than five hours. In one incident,
four people narrowly escaped a tree that fell onto their car while travelling near the famous
Smokehouse Inn between Tanah Rata and Brinchang. The environmentalist explained the drainage
system that hasn’t been upgraded in 20 years – the landslide that hit yesterday came as no surprise.
