 According to the video, what is a "euphemism"? Why do we use them?

- "Euphemism" is defined as a mild or indirect word or expression. It’s a prettier word, a better

word, a softer word, used to talk about something.

 What are some of the euphemistic phrases that Sommer thought of when her child was

diagnosed with leukemia? Share at least two examples you heard from the video.

- She used some words like "warrior" and "hero".

- She tried to choose her words very carefully, speak plainly, clearly and simply.

 Why does the speaker add video games as an example in her talk? What does this

example show?

- Because she wanted to emphasize the importance of euphemisms

 Why does the speaker say we need to be careful about the words that we use?

- Because your words sometimes is a weapon to “kill” someone if we don’t use it carefully

 Reflection: Do you think it is better to use euphemisms or to be direct and use the

original word? Why? For example, do you think it is okay to use "dead" instead of "pass

away". Are there other euphemisms for death or other words that you have heard of in

your own life?

- I think using euphemisms is better, because we use it such as “pass away” that is a direct

and respectful way of talking about death. That is not okay if we use “dead” instead of “pass

away”, I prefer to use “pass away” than “dead”. And some euphemisms for death that I heard

in my life are that “meet one’s maker”, and “depart”.
