Merritts Ironman participants

A falling rock the size of a basketball struck and injured a motorist on the Coquihalla Highway north of Hope at about 1pm yesterday afternoon, RCMP said. A woman was airlifted to hospital after the boulder crashed through her windshield. The highway was closed in both directions while she was airlifted to hospital. She is expected to recover. Fraser Valley RCMP Traffic Services is investigating. Huge congratulations to Heather Broman, Arnie Gray, Ted Moore & Dylan Richardson, who participated in Sundays Ironman race in Penticton. They were among the 2800+ registered for the 3.8km swim-180km bike42.2kmrun 18-hour long event. It was a hot weekend, above 30C, but a breeze picked up on Sunday morning to fan the athletes though it was reported to be quite strong on some legs of the race. This was the events 29th anniversary.

The Sage Orienteering Club of Kamloops will host the North American Rogaining Championships at Lundbom Lake, September 10 & 11. Rogaine is a map & compass event that runs over a 24-hr period. The sport originated in Australia some 30 years or so ago, and it is currently very popular Down Under. Teams of 2-5 people choose how long and how far they will venture to find as many of the controls marked on the map as they can. The Intl Rogaining Federation is actively expanding the sport throughout the rest of the world, and a world championships is held every 2 years. The Sage club in Kamloops held the 3rd version of this event at Douglas Lake Ranch in 1998. The entry deadline is Sunday, Sept. 4, and theres lots of info at their website: www.orienteeringbc.ca/sage/

"I came home early and found my wife lying naked in bed. She Claimed she had just gotten out of the shower. Well, her hair was dry And I checked the shower and it was completely dry too. I knew she was Into some hanky-panky and I began to look for her lover. I went onto the Balcony of our 9th floor apartment and found him clinging to the rail by his finger tips. I was so angry that I began bashing his Fingers with a flower pot. He let go and fell, but his fall was Broken by some awnings and bushes. On seeing he was still alive I Found super human strength to drag our antique cedar chest to the Balcony and throw it over. It hit the man and killed him. At this point the stress got to me and I suffered a massive heart attack and Died.? The clerk thanked him and sent him on to the next office. The second applicant said that his last day was his worst. "I was on the Roof of an apartment building working on the AC equipment. I stumbled over my tools and toppled off the building. I managed to grab onto the Balcony rail of a 9th floor apartment but some idiot came rushing out On the balcony and bashed my hands with a flower pot. I fell but hit some awnings and bushes and survived, but as I looked up I saw a huge Chest falling toward me. I tried to crawl out of the way but failed and was hit and killed by the chest." The clerk couldn?t help but chuckle As he directs the man to the next room. He is still giggling when his third customer of the day enters. He Apologizes and says "I doubt that your last day was as interesting as The fellow in here just before you." "I don't know" replies the man, "picture this, I'm buck naked and hiding in this cedar chest in this 9th floor apartment....."

41 Wildfire Mgt Branch personnel left yesterday to help fight a large fire near Omak, Washington. BC airtankers helped fight this fire the day before, and the state has now requested 41 of BC's Type 1 personnel, consisting of 2 unit crews and 1 agency representative, due to the steep terrain where the fire is located.

Also hanging in the gallery are some great pieces of artwork that have been contributed to the gallery & Valley Visual Artists to be auctioned to raise money for new flooring and lights at the gallery, and for the VVA educational fund.
