Indo-Bhutan Friendship Treaty of 1949

Terms and Conditions of the Treaty 


ARTICLE 1
 There shall the perpetual peace and friendship between the Government of India and the
Government of Bhutan.
ARTICLE 2

 The Government of India undertakes to exercise no interference in the internal


administration of Bhutan. On its part the Government of Bhutan agrees to be guided by
the advice of the Government of India in regard to its external relations.
ARTICLE 3

 The Government of India agrees to make an annual payment of Rupees five lakhs to the
Government of Bhutan. 
ARTICLE 4
 To return 32 square miles of Dewangiri territory to Government of Bhutan by
Government of India within one year of signing the treaty 
ARTICLE 5

 There shall be free trade and commerce between the Government of India and of the
Government of Bhutan; and the Government of India agrees to grant the Government of
Bhutan every facility for the carriage, by land and water. 
ARTICLE 6

 The Government of India agrees that the Government of Bhutan shall be free to import
with the assistance and approval of the Government of India, from or through India into
Bhutan.

ARTICLE 7
 Both agreed to treat people living in either territories with equal justice.
ARTICLE 8
 To surrender both Bhutanese and Indian subjects accused of any crimes specified by both
the governments as per the Act.
ARTICLE 9
 To solve the disputes by negotiation arising from the interpretation and application of the
this treaty 
ARTICLE 10

 This treaty shall continue in force in perpetuity unless terminated or modified by mutual
consent.
