20 *Instructional Input, Modeling, or Procedures

min
TTW instruct the students about pronoun usage and Plural and possessive nouns.

Pronoun Usage

TTW go over the rules for pronoun usage:

1. He/She/I – Subject pronouns

2. Him/Her/Me – Object pronouns
Rule 1: These Subject pronouns are used when the subject is doing the action.
EXAMPLES: He is building the house. She is walking the dog. I am baking the cake.

Rule 2: Object pronouns are used when the subjects are receiving the action.
EXAMPLES: Sarah has chosen him to be the leader. I would rather choose her for
the job position. My father gave my brother and me some money for food.

NOTE: If you are confused when to use I or me, isolate the pronoun to see if it makes
sense.

TTW go over the rules for Possessive/Plural Nouns:

1. Singular possessive – ‘s (carl’s car, jerry’s house)

2. Plural possessive nouns – s’ (the sisters’ dance recital. My grandparents’ pets)
3. Plural nouns – s (chairs, boxes, horses)

Possessive is ownership.
Plural is multiple.
Singular is one.

5 min *Check for Understanding

To summarize – ask the following questions to the students.

1. When do I use the pronoun “I”?

2. When do I use the pronoun “me”?
3. When does the apostrophe go before “s”? – Singular possessive.
4. When does the apostrophe go after the “s”? – Plural possessive
5. When is an apostrophe not needed at all? – when the noun is plural
6. When is it not necessary for an apostrophe or an “s”? – when the noun is
singular.

25 *Guided Practice
min
TTW go over the following questions with the students to make sure they understand
the grammar rules.
TTW go over the question examples out loud.
These questions will be on google drive so the students can see the problems.

1. Between him and (she, her) I prefer her

2. She can sit between you and (me, I)
3. Everyone except (he, him) is going to be there
4. I called as many people as (she, her)
5. He is heavier than (I, me).

or “I”. It looks like the following:

For possessive and plural pronouns – TSW complete an IXL. IXL FF. 3 which helps
the practice their skills using possessive and plural pronouns.
Advanced Students –

Pronoun Usage
TTW have the students write a paragraph demonstrating their ability of correct usage
of pronouns he/she/I and him/her/me.

EXAMPLE: My brother has just joined the navy. He has been in school to be a
fighter jet pilot. My parents have asked if my sister or me would like to go help him
move to his new apartment. My sister and I both decided we wanted to go. However,
my younger brother wanted to stay home. As a result, my parents told my sister and
me that either one of us would have to stay home and watch him. I finally decided to
stay behind and my brother and me will do something fun while they are away.
Possessive and Plural nouns
TTW have the students write a short paragraph demonstrating their ability to use possessive
and plural nouns.
EXAMPLE: My brother’s dogs came over to my house the other day. The dogs’ tails
wagged excitedly at the first sight of me. Later that day, my friends came over. My friends’
dogs all came over to and we all went to the dog park.

Lesson Reflection

In this lesson, I did a review on pronoun usage and possessive and plural nouns. About a

week ago, I gave the students a pre-assessment. On this pre-assessment, there was multiple

grammar rule questions. In this lesson, pronoun usage and possessive and plural nouns were the

top two questions they answered incorrectly.

What went well? The content instruction went well. I believe I was clear in delivering the

material, gave space and time to ask questions, and received positive responses during

instruction. Furthermore, the students responded well when I rewarded them for good behavior.

For example, if the students behaved well during content instruction and independent practice,

they earned a 5-minute brain break. They also liked the fun activities that I included, Kahoots

that targeted their skills with pronoun usage and plural and possessive nouns. The students liked

the sense of competition and were motivated to answer the questions correctly.

What could use improvement. Time management always seems to get the best of me. I

had plenty of activities for the students to do. However, I needed to be clearer on which tasks

needed to be completed first and top priority. Although I had the instructions on the board on

which task to complete first, the students seemed to still not understand which activity needed to

be done. In the future, I believe that I must separate the instructions even further, so they are not

overwhelmed about the amount of work they must complete. Moreover, as I make my

instructions clearer, I need to provide more examples for the students to fall back on for

guidance.

What should I take with me for my own future classroom? One thing that I thought of

during this lesson specifically are expectation lists that hang on the wall. For example, I want to

include a poster on the different volumes the students tend to reach. Furthermore, point to which
level of volume I want them to be at. I would want to have some type of creative attention getter

for the students. Perhaps like a doorbell, or interesting whistle, something that will grab their

attention. Lastly, depending on what grade I teach, I want to have a prize box for the students

with school supplies or candy for positive reinforcement.
