Introduction

This Caribbean School Based Assessment is based on a research of the causes and consequences
of unemployment to eradicate or reduce the issue within the West Ruimveldt Community.
Unemployment however, is a realistic undesirable issue that is prevalent within the West
Ruimveldt community today. It challenges the many efforts of progression that have been
attempted by some members within that community, and is also a major issue in other
communities in Guyana. This great enigma exist commonly in Georgetown and have been
viewed from different prospective. Finally, one may say that unemployment affects
communities, societies and social institutions such as educational institutes, government systems
and health care institutions. Unemployment affects a portion of the selected population and
should be strategically approached in an attempt to minimize or resolve the growing issue.

4
Title of Project

A research of the causes and consequences of unemployment within the West Ruimveldt
Community.

5
Objectives of the Project

The objectives of this project is:

 To examine the negative effects of unemployment in the West Ruimveldt Community.

 To determine how has the rate of unemployment changed over the past five years in the
West Ruimveldt Community.
 To identify the most common issue that causes unemployment in the Community of West
Ruimveldt.

6
Background/ Overview of the Issue

Unemployment is a situation where someone is willing and able to work and employment is not
available. Unemployment was chosen because this topic has a negative impact on the society
since being unemployed means there is no income, which leads to an increase in poverty. The
researcher had lately discovered, that unemployment leads to serious problems in the home. The
burden of debt will increase, leading to economic problems.

On the 10th June, 2016 “High unemployment among youths leads to criminality,” as stated in the
Guyana Chronicle newspaper by Rabindra Rooplall “We are having some bad economic times
and generally in times like these there will be increased unemployment especially at the youth
level and indeed our youth unemployment level is pretty bad and this cause the young and even
old people to start getting idle and criminality begins to be on the upsurge if and when we don’t
contain it with other means , and this is what we are doing to help in that process.” Nevertheless
the unemployment rate is persistently rising because the youth population has increased in
statistics between the years of 2007- 2017 and a decreased will cause the opposite effect.

The objectives of this research:

 To examine the negative effects of unemployment in the West Ruimveldt Community.

 To determine how has the rate of unemployment changed over the past five years in the
West Ruimveldt Community.
 To identify the most common issue that causes unemployment in the Community of West
Ruimveldt.

7

Ruimveldt. The methods that were used to strategize data collections were the thirteen (13)

The qualitative data were the eight (8) interview sheets that included seven (7) questions that
were distributed and recollected from few of the residents in the West Ruimveldt Community
pertaining to the unemployment issue.

debt, homelessness and household stress, shame and an increase in social isolation.

employable.
2. The provision of Government projects. This includes; the construction of new
infrastructure to lure workers into the area. This will reduce frictional unemployment
among workers who are geographically immobile.
3. To established apprenticeship program. This will give adults a chance to learn, trained
and improved their opportunities in finding jobs.

24
Conclusion

In completion of this School Based Assessment. The researchers can vividly say that all the
objectives that were outlined for this project were met. The issue of unemployment has a severe
impact on any economy. It creates negative effects to the unemployed, as they are jobless and
suffer from worse prospects to find new jobs and those who are employed feel secured to keep
their jobs in the future. Investigations otherwise were made towards for example: the major
problems caused by unemployment is an increased population, this leads to higher
unemployment rates and lack of educational skills. The consequences of this issue leads to
severe financial hardship poverty and debt. The Government can provide projects to lure the
unemployed into various sectors within the economy. Nevertheless, unemployment can be
controlled by reducing policies, geographical subsides etc. with this research information, it can
be settled that this research was successful.
