QUESTION 1

a) A thermometer gives a reading of 113 °F. What is the temperature in °C?

(1 mark)

b) A 18.72 g sample of nickel metal is placing in a graduated cylinder initially containing 10.3
mL of water, causing the water level in the cylinder to rise to 18.7 mL. Find the density of
the nickel metal in centigram per liter (cg/L).
(2 marks)

c) Perform the following calculations and round the answers to the correct numbers of
significant figures:

QUESTION 2

a) Predict the name or chemical formula following compounds:

i) N2O4
ii) Cu(NO3)2
iii) Hypochlorous acid
(3 marks)

c) An organic compound A, contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen only. The combustion of
1.84 g of the organic compound A, gives out 3.52 g of carbon dioxide (CO2) and 2.16 g of
water (H2O). Determine the empirical formula of the organic compound.
(6 marks)

d) Consider the reaction

MnO2 + 4HCl → MnCl2 + Cl2 + 2H2O
