 To learn how Manila was founded, who are the people behind it, and the timeline
of it.
 To introduce how the Filipino’s achieve independence.
 To have a better understanding of our own culture and society.

about the city of Manila. Do

Manila is? What do you guys
know about Manila?
Manila is the capital of the Philippines.
-Do you know why Manila is
considered as the capital of the Manila is populated.
Philippines? Manila is
considered as the capital of our
country because of its
significance historically since
the Spanish period.

-Manila comes from two

PRE SPANISH ERA

Manila began as a Muslim


settlement at the mouth of
Pasig River along the shores of
Manila Bay. Governed by 3
Rajas or Muslim Community
Leaders: Rajah Sulayman &
Rajah Matanda who
governed the south of Pasig.
And Rajah Lakandula who
rules the community north of
the river.

A person who ruled and


governed the city mostly lives
in the Old Tondo. They are
called:
 Lord or Panginoon
 Son of Heaven or Anak
Banwa
 Lord of the Place or
Lakandula

Manila was known as


SUVARNADVIPA that means
Gold. Until they officially
named it as “Kota Seludong”
or Kingdom of Maynila.

SPANISH ERA

First Spanish Governor-


General of the Philippines
Miguel Lopez de Legazpi
founded Manila and entered
the mouth of the river in 1571,
together with other Spanish
conquistadors. They destroyed
the muslim settlement, and
founded Intramuros.

CATHOLICISM

Armed troops in the region put


down local resistance and
Jesuit missionaries roamed the
countryside, converting native
population to Roman
Catholicism.

19th CENTURY

Few attempts by Chinese,


Dutch and British to take over
the Colony. Manila became a
colonial trading hub over the
years.

KATIPUNAN MOVEMENT

This is the time where our


National Hero was involved.
Jose Rizal who was put on
trial and executed in 1896 for
his part in Katipunan
Movement. He is the country's
national hero due to his
political writing that opens the
eye of the Filipino during the
Spanish Colonization.

BATTLE OF MANILA BAY

Spain was at war with


America, and after a heavy
defeat at the Battle of Manila
Bay, relinquished her colony
to the Americans.

AMERICAN COLONIZATION

During the American


Colonization, a lot has
changed. This is the time
where we adapt most of their

 Various Democratic

and Architectural Styles

YEAR 1942

Manila was declared an open


city and was occupied by the
Japanese.

YEAR 1945

City suffered damages during


the Japanese invasion but was
recaptured by U.S Forces in
1945.

YEAR 1946

Manila became the capital of the


newly independent Republic of
the Philippines.
