Course description

Studying history allows us to gain valuable perspectives on the problems of our modern
society. Many problems, features , and characteristics of modern Philippine society can be traced
back to historical questions on our colonial past, as well as our pre-colonial culture. Our export
oriented economy for example, can be traced back to the ending of the galleon trade and the
subsequent liberalization and tying of the country to the world market, coupled with the lack of
industrial advancement in the islands. This and other lessons can be uncovered by digging into
the country’s past.
Knowledge in Philippines history is important for reason that you have to understand
and know things that happened in the past for you to appreciate the present and the future
situation in the country.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, students are expected to:

1. Appreciate what are forefathers and heroes did for our country
2. Ensure that we don’t repeat the same mistakes as our forefathers did
3. Instill the virtue of nationalism and patriotism in our heart and consciousness
4. Help a community,nation, religious or ethnic group understand the past and present
by orienting that group to the future as a civic service.
5.Make Filipino understand our country’s importance by making it part of our
collective stance and sentiment.

Part 1: The Philippines and Its Beginning

I. Introduction:

The history of the Philippines between 900 and 1565, also known as the pre- period or
pre- Hispanic, begins with the creation of the Laguna Copperplate Inscription (LCI) in 900 and
ends with Spanish colonization in1565. The LCI is the first written document found in an ancient
Philippine language. The inscription itself identifies the date of its creation and its deciphering in
1992 made it possible to put the end of pre-historical Philippines around 900 AD.

Among The cultural achievement of the pre-colonial Philippines include those covered by pre
history and the early history (900-1565) of the Philippine archipelago inhabitants, the
indigenous forefathers of today’s Filipino people. These Cultural achievements like, people’s
beliefs systems, and culture in general that are notable in many ethnic societies range from
agriculture, societal and environmental concepts, spiritual beliefs, up to advances in technology,
science and the arts.

II. Objectives: students are expected to

1.Identify and emulate cultural beliefs and practices that encourages Filipino heritage
2.Become the bridge that would link the countries rich history between generations
3.Get involve to enrich cultural practices arts and literature in their lives

Geographical Features Of the Philippines


 Outstanding physical features of the Philippines include the irregular
configuration of the archipelago, the coastline of some 22,550 miles (36,290 km), the
great extent of mountainous country, the narrow and interrupted coastal plains, the
generally northward trend of the river systems, and the spectacular lake
