Blue-Green Archipelago Net City

Urban Nodes, Tansition Areas, Knowledge Territories, and City Landscapes constitute contemporary
urban phenomena and typologies.

They form characteristic neighbourhoods, districts (Lynch 1960), cities in the city (Ungers 1977),
green archipelago (Koolhaas 1977), or situations (Christiaanse 2005) in urban regions.

As urban design typologies, they are characterized by commonalities in regard to criteria such
as history, context, topography, concept, morphology, density, urbanity, scale, building typology,
programme, and atmosphere.

However, these typologies don’t constitute clear classifications, but instead thematically overlap.

As a model for eco-heritage-led urbanism, they ideally form a polycentric Net City (Oswald, Baccini
1998/2003) of diverse urban quarters and neighborhoods.

As characteristic districts, they are embedded in their cultural and natural environment, and connected
by a blue-green public space network, mobility and infrastructure system.

Definition, Kerstin Höger

URBAN NODES – CORE, CENTER, SUBCENTER, HUB, UED, MUD

High-density development areas often located at central transportation junctions (HUBs) that are
increasingly homogenized, commodified, and upgraded into urban entertainment destinations (UEDs).

Yet, due to their optimal location as well as high social, functional and spatial density, they have the
potential to become veritable mixed-use developments (MUDs) and places with a high degree of
urbanity.

Prerequisites are
- very good connection to public transportation,
- prioritization of public spaces,
- human scale,
- inclusion of housing and everyday activities, and
- social diversification.

TRANSITION AREAS – NEIGHBOURHOOD, POST-INDUSTRIAL SITE

Neighbourhoods and post-industrial sites, where the adaptive re-use of the heritage is boosting urban
regeneration.

The reactivation with a mixture of informal and formal activities, bottom-up and top-down
developments, and the combination of existing and new structures has become an approved method
for the creation of true sustainable quarters.

These heritage-led urban regeneration areas evolve out of their historical and social milieu. Thus, they
cultivate inspiring living and working environments, as well as an authentic urbanity and identity.

CITY LANDSCAPE – EDGE CITY, IN-BETWEEN CITY, AGGLOMERATION, PERIPHERY

Urban sprawl and the vanishing difference between city and landscape has transmuted whole swaths
of land into undefined spaces, urban and scenic non-places with an arbitrary order.

There is an urgent demand for the protection and considerate handling of our cultural landscape, as
well as a conscious shaping and differentiation towards built structures.

Redensification and connection of isolated residential and industrial areas, and/or the systematic
deconstruction and renaturalisation are instruments against the destructive influence of the continuing
urban sprawl.

KNOWLEDGE TERRITORIES – CAMPUS, SCIENCE CITY, CLUSTER, ALLEY, VALLEY

Through the concentration or clustering of specific activities, creative and innovative networks are
formed.

These either consciously settle in an urban realm, or generate their own urbanity in a suburban
location. In this way, they create thriving and innovative environments for the networked knowledge
society to flourish.

In analogy to Silicon Valley and Alley, knowledge territories act as urban catalysts, by transforming our
cities and city landscapes into booming agglomerations, and thus influencing the socioeconomic life of
a whole region.
