The Mystery of Yakutia: The Labynkyr Devil

There are many places in Russia shrouded in secrets and riddles. In the mountains
in the Crimea you can see ghosts; the city of Arkaim was created three thousand
years ago; the Kolyma tract is a place of mass graves; in the Nizhny Novgorod
swamps people constantly disappear, and in the Urals people are in contact with
aliens. But they are not even close to Labynkyr - a mysterious lake that terrifies
local peoples and research groups.

The reservoir is located in the Republic of Sakha, Yakutia, in the Oymyakonsky

district. It is located at an altitude of one kilometer above sea level and not a
single stream leads to it. The area is swampy, there are almost no roads, if you
count the trails as roads.

The Kolyma highway passes very close by, a place no less terrible than Labynkyr
itself. The fact is that the Soviet government sent people objectionable to it into
exile. A million prisoners passed through the Kolyma highway, half of which
remained there .. in the ground. The corpses served as a compactor for the soil,
and those who could normally be buried in the ground were buried right next to the
road.

Labynkyrskoye Lake has a rectangular shape, the water is quite clear. The first
riddle for scientists, which they, rejecting mysticism, cannot solve is the fact
that the water in the lake freezes extremely slowly, and this is despite the severe
frosts prevailing in this area.

There are three islands on the lake, and one of them is the second riddle. The
diameter of the island is 30 meters, it is 5-6 meters above the surface, it is
located exactly in the middle of the lake. Of interest is the fact that the island
is sometimes completely hidden in the water, despite the fact that the water level
itself does not rise. The locals say that this is part of the torso of a creature
that lives in these waters.

The legends of the peoples have their basis, but it is madness to deny the fact
that they could reach the present day distorted. How many of these have been. The
local peoples all, as one, know the legend of the Labynkyr devil that lives in
these waters. The history is as old as the world, but the locals are afraid to come
here, bypassing the place. The Yakuts describe the creature as something huge dark
gray with a huge mouth. According to legend, the beast is extremely unfriendly and
is even able to emerge from the waters.

Note that people rarely come here - the nearest settlement is 150 kilometers away.
It is hard to get there, the best means is an all-terrain vehicle, you can also
take a helicopter, but this pleasure is expensive. Due to their impassability,
these places are poorly studied, but from time to time entire expeditions come to
the lake, many of which confirm with the help of equipment, including an echo
sounder, the presence in the waters of something large, reaching ten meters in
length and definitely alive .

Hermit Alyams
It is not known the real name of the hermit - Alyams? Or his pseudonym. No one has
ever asked a man such a question, everyone was interested in why he chose a hermit
way of life, and what he sees there on the lake.

Alyams is one of those whom the communists exiled here. When the camps began to
close, Alyams did not leave Sakha, he stayed here to live. He chose loneliness. It
was known that the hermit lived on the banks of the Labynkyr for many years, and
the only reason for his appearance in the settlements was the exchange of fish that
he caught in the lake for other goods and products. According to those who know
Alyams, he often took reindeer and vodka instead. He liked to drink a hot drink
right in the village, he constantly told stories about the lake and the devil that
lives in it. His stories did not leave the village for a long time, but once they
managed to escape from the remote Yakut hinterland, and rumors about the Labynkyr
devil again spread throughout the country (the first evidence was back in the 50s).

In 1993, Alyams came to exchange very bad, it was obvious that the man was unwell.
The villagers forcibly took him to the hospital, where he constantly said that he
should not leave Labynkyr, otherwise he would die. Unfortunately, the prophecy came
true and Alyams died. The only witnesses to his stories were the inhabitants of a
very small village.

Expeditions
The first explorer of these places V. Tverdokhlebov went here back in 1953. An
expedition to such places at that time was a real test. However, Lake Labynkyr was
waiting for its guests.

From the materials published upon the return of the scientist, several entries can
be noted. Tverdokhlebov described that while exploring the lake, his expedition
noticed a long object in the water, which was definitely alive and moving in an
arc. At one point, he went to the boat and a freezing fear pierced everyone who was
on board at that moment. A part of a dark gray creature was sticking out from under
the water, a horn, or something resembling it, could be seen. And it was only a
part of the creature, a large body was observed under water.

For many years no one came here for scientific purposes. Until the scientists began
to hear rumors about the Labynkyr trait, which were spread by the hermit Alyams.
Only in the 21st century did the researchers decide on a voyage to this unusual
place. Here is a timeline of some of the events:
1. Autumn 1999. The research group studied several lakes at once, including
Labynkyr. Nothing special could be found, but due to strange circumstances, the
dog, which was tied to a tree, disappeared.

2. 2004 Researcher Vadim Chernobrov discovered unknown traces near the lake and
stalagmites (ice growths that remain after a body crawls onto land)

3. 2005. "Searchers" (expeditionary group), thanks to the echo sounder, found a

huge crack at the bottom of the lake.

4. The telesonde found that a large number of animal bones lie at the bottom of the
lake.

5. 2007 Divers descended to one lake, according to their words, there was something
in the water, something was moving, but it was far away and it was impossible to
make out what kind of object it was.

6. February 2013. Representatives of the Russian Geographical Society are studying

the lake, no traces of a large creature were noticed.

7. 2016 Extreme Andrey Solovyov spent 100 days on the lake. During these days, he
collected the stories of residents and pilots, crumpled them and researched them.
Solovyov noted that according to one pilot, he saw a large reptile when he flew
over the lake. Also, the extreme was surprised by the holes in the nets, which
could only be left by a large creature.

Who lives at the bottom of the lake

There is no direct evidence of the existence of a huge creature in Lake Labynkyr.
There are only records of explorers, stories of those who saw and folk legends.
However, the veil of secrecy is not open and people continue to go missing in these
parts, not to mention the finds of animal remains near the lake. Locals note that
thrill-seekers come here from time to time, half of them do not return to the
village.

Who is this? Myth or Yakut Loch Ness. There are those who suggest that this is a
mammoth that has managed to adapt to water. A semi-aquatic lifestyle, like seals,
would help mammoths easily survive severe frosts. That's just, legends and people
describe the creature as a predator.

There is a version that this is a relic pike. But more according to the theory of
its habitat, it is similar to a plesiosaur. The length is nine to ten meters, the
width is slightly more than a meter and a huge mouth. All the stories about the
meeting with the Labynkyr devil come down to late autumn and early winter.
Moreover, the stories affect not only Lake Labynkyr, but also the neighboring one -
the Gate. According to the local population, they are connected by a huge cave,
which at the moment science has not yet confirmed.
