Is there a correlation between the time

effect they have on their GPA score?
RESEARCH
QUESTION

Is there a correlation between the

time students spend on social media
and the effect they have on their GPA
score?
INTRODUCTION

I have always been wondering how the students

GPA get affected by their overuse of social media. I

chose the topic simply
because I myself have
experienced my grades dropping when I was
addicted with social media. With that, I wanted to
investigate if there is a correlation between hours
students spend on social media and the effect they

have on their GPA. I hope that with this statistic

report, we can determine the relationships
between the two. In addition, we can come up with
a research and analysis
as to the why and how
students GPA drop.
It will not be easy to gather the data needed since

we have to go through a survey or collect the report

from their reports and grades.

Either way, we have
to do something in order to have the data that we
need to complete the report requirement.

PLAN OF ACTION

There are many ways to analyze

the data collected from
the survey and compare it to the data collected from

reports and grades. In this report, I will summarize the

results of the data collection, and then I will present the
data using the mean, mode, median and range
computation. The graph of the four computations will

help me determine the initial observation as to the

correlation of the two variables. After that, I will present
the data using the box of whisker. A box and whisker

to display the median,
plot are a visual tool that used
lower and upper quartiles, and lower and upper

extremes of a set of data. Box and whisker plots help you

to see the variance of data and
can be a very helpful tool.

The report will also include

the correlation coefficient,
which is the specific measure that quantifies the
strength of the linear relationship between two variables
in a correlation analysis. To
further the analysis, the
proportion of the variation in the dependent variable
that is predictable from the
independent variable will
show as well.

Tendencies
A)Hours Spent On Social Media

For a small data set, you first count the number of

data points (n) and arrange the data points in
increasing order. If the number

of data points is
uneven, you add 1 to the number of points and divide

the results by 2 to get the rank of the data point

whose value is the median.

MIDPOINT: 2.5, 3.5, 4.5, 5.5, 6.5, 7.5, 8.5, 9.5

·The mode for this data set is 4 < t < 5, which was
repeated 16 times.
Median- 5.5

Mean- 6.2

ðTo find the lower quartile (Q1)- 4.5

ð To find the upper quartile
(Q3),
ð Q3 = 8.5

· The minimum or lowest

value is 2.5
· The maximum or highest value is 9.5
· Thus, the range is: 9-2=7

. IQR: 8.5-4.5= 4

x<LQ-(1.5 x IQR) x>UQ+ (1.5 x IQR)

x< -1.5 x> 14.5

Central Tendencies

·To find the median, I first arranged my data for each

variable in order from the least number to the
greatest:

MIDPOINT: 97.5, 92.5, 87.5, 82.5 77.5, 72.5, 67.5

Median = 82.5
Mean= 84.35
The mode for this data set is 80 ≤ t < 85 that was
repeated 20 times.

ðTo find the lower quartile (Q1) Q1 = 82.5

ð To find the upper quartile
(Q3),
ðQ3 = 92.5

·The minimum or lowest value is 67.5

· The maximum or highest

value is 97.5

·Thus, the range is : 92.5 - 82.5=10

. IQR: 97.5 - 67.5= 30

x<LQ - (1.5 x IQR)

x>UQ + (1.5 x IQR)
x< 82.5 - (1.5 x 30) x> 137.5
x<37.5

COEFFICIENT OF CORRELATION

In statistics, correlation is a way of establishing the

relationship/association between two variables. In
other words, the correlation
coefficient formula helps
in calculating the correlation coefficient, which
measures the dependency of one variable on the other
variable. Correlation is measure
numerically using the
correlation coefficient.

Hours Spent on social media by students

The standard deviation is a

measure of the amount

a set of values. A low
of variation or dispersion of
standard deviation indicates that the values tend to
be close to the mean of the set, while a high

standard deviation indicates that the values are

spread out over a wider range.

COEFFICIENT OF CORRELATION

GPA Score

Low standard deviation means data are clustered

around the mean, and high standard deviation

indicates data are more spread out. A standard

deviation close to zero indicates that data points are
close to the mean, whereas
a high or low standard
deviation indicates data points are respectively
above or below the mean.

SCATTER PLOT

The scattered chart above shows a negative strong correlation between the number

of students using social media. It shows that the increase number of students using
social media affects the students’ GPA scores.

Even in the results of the standard deviation and coefficient of r, there is a significant
amount of correlation between the two variables in the investigation and as a result
of many statistics computation.

CONCLUSION

The results of the many computations of different statistical

values shows that there is a correlation between the hours

spent by students on social media and their GPA scores. The
standard deviation tells you, on average, how far each score
lies from the mean. In normal distributions, a high standard

deviation means that values are generally far from the mean,
while a low standard deviation
indicates that values are
cluster close to the mean.

The coefficient of variation or also known as the relative

standard deviation of 0.52 and 0.33 respectively, shows that
we were able to gather a good method of performance in
gathering and collecting data.

There are many factors affecting the results of the

investigation and as a student,
I would say that one of the
factors that is so huge is the way the students were trained

and disciplined in choosing the healthy snacks over the

unhealthy ones.

The report provided me with many things to think about. It

made me realize that anything
in the world around us can be
investigated using the different
statistical method and
thereby, come up with a good inference or interpretation that
would be beneficial to a variety of things.

Finally, I would say, “Facts are stubborn things, but statistics are
pliable.” Mark Twain, 1835-1910.
