ASSIGNMENT - II

Topic: INSULATORS

1. Each conductor of a 3-phase high-voltage transmission line is suspended by a string of 4

suspension type disc insulators. If the potential difference across the second unit from top is
13·2 kV and across the third from top is 18 kV, determine the voltage between conductors.

2. A 3 phase OH transmission line is being supported by three disc insulators. The

potentials across top unit and middle unit are 9kV and 11kV respectively. Calculate
(i) the ratio of capacitance between pin and earth to the self capacitance of each unit.
(ii) the line voltage and (iii) string efficiency.

3. An insulator string consists of three units, insulator nearest to the line having a safe
working voltage of 20kV. The ratio of self to shunt capacitance is 6:1. Determine the
line voltage and string efficiency.

4. An insulator string for 66kV lines has 4 discs. The shunt capacitance between each
joint and metal work is 10% of the capacitance of each disc. Find the voltage across
each disc and the string efficiency.

5. A suspension type insulator is having, 6 units and the value of pin to earth capacitance
is C. Find the line to pin capacitances to equalize the voltage across each unit.
