“The Outsiders” Alphabet Book from A-Z

Ambulance
Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally were all rescued
from the church and taken to Tulsa by
ambulances.

Bob Sheldon
Bob Sheldon was the Soc who traumatized
Johnny and was the boyfriend of Sherri Valance.
Johnny later killed him after his group tried to
drown Ponyboy.
Cancer sticks
Cancer sticks(cigarettes) were used by
many greasers at an early age. Ponyboy
used this all the time to calm himself
down.

Dallas Winston
Dallas “Dally” Winston was a member of
Ponyboy’s gang of greasers. He helped
Pony and Johnny escape Tulsa after
Johnny’s murder and was killed by
police for threatening them with a gun.
Escape
Ponyboy and Johnny escaped Tulsa quickly after Johnny
stabbed Bob and killed him. This was what led to the
eventual deaths of Johnny and Dally.

Family
Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darry are a family of orphans.
Darry and Ponyboy had some trouble getting along, but
they all appreciate each other and value each other a lot.
Greasers
The greasers are the low-class
teenagers living on the East Side. They
are mostly known as juvenile
delinquents and struggle with money.

Homesickness
Ponyboy became homesick after staying
in the abandoned church atop Jay
Mountain for quite a while and began
missing his family and home in Tulsa.
Identity
Social identity is what divides the Socs
and the Greasers in the novel. It is so
important to the point that some hide
their real identity and avoid others just
to match their social identity’s
expectations.

Jay Mountain
Jay Mountain was the location of the abandoned church where Ponyboy and Johnny took shelter in.
Killing
Johnny killed Bob Sheldon
with his blade when he and
his gang were drowning
Ponyboy at the playground.

Lift
Dallas Winston lifted a
store shortly after Johnny
succumbed to his injuries
at the hospital.
Money
Money is something that many greasers including
Pony’s family struggle with. His brothers needed to
quit education and work for it. Meanwhile, the Socs
have so much money that they become spoiled.

Neglect
Johnny was neglected often by his parents, as they
did not care what happened to him and let him sleep
outside.
Orphan
Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darry Curtis all became
orphaned after their parents died in a car
accident.

Ponyboy Curtis
Ponyboy is the main protagonist of the novel
and is the youngest member of his gang. He’s
the only member with some innocence still
remaining. He’s intelligent and got A’s at his
school. He got wrapped up in the murder of Bob
Sheldon and ended up losing his fellow greasers
Johnny and Dally.
Quarrel
Throughout the entire novel, Darry and Ponyboy quarrel
multiple times, at various times, about various subjects.
Darry yelled too much and takes everything seriously
while Ponyboy didn’t think enough about certain things.
They promised to stop quarreling after Sodapop insisted
they do.

Randy Adderson
Randy is a Soc who used to be friends with Bob Sheldon
and was in his group. After Bob was murdered, Bob got
tired of fighting and talked to Ponyboy about what he
was feeling. He gained the respect of Ponyboy and later
testified in court regarding the night of Bob’s death.
Socs
The Socs, short for Socials, are rich teenagers who live on the
West Side. They like to throw beer blasts and jump greasers for
kicks. They are always regarded as assets to society, with futures
and money.

“Two-Bit” Mathews
Keith “Two-Bit” Mathews is a member of Ponyboy’s gang. He
likes telling jokes and is always grinning at everyone. He’s a
smart aleck to even the cops and is friendly to Ponyboy.
Upper-class
The Socs are in the upper class,
thus they are considered an asset
to society and are all rich.

Victim
Johnny was a victim of an attack
by Bob’s group and became
traumatized throughout the book.
West Side
The West Side was the side that the Socs
resided in. This was considered their
territory and it was the more affluent
side of Tulsa.

X-ray
Johnny, Ponyboy, and Darry all took an
X-ray after returning to Tulsa and being
hospitalized, to check on their injuries
after the incident at the abandoned
church. This is how the doctors knew
Johnny had broken his spine and was
paralyzed.
Yelling
When Darry and Ponyboy were quarreling,
Darry tended to yell at Ponyboy a lot, which
infuriated him.

Zero
After Johnny and Dally’s deaths, Pony
described his feelings as simply zero. He
didn’t feel scared, mad, or anything. He felt
nothing at all after the sudden misfortunes.
