CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Efficiency is the simplest definition of productivity. There are numerous activities

that students can engage in outside of class that cannot be overemphasized. Most students

have a lot on their plates, but the inability to plan and manage time causes efficiency to

deteriorate, which in turn causes complaints and worry at the last minute (Favour, 2017).

Being persistent in engaging in a productive life is hard, especially if you are a student.

There are several various distractions that could keep someone from staying productive.

In addition, becoming productive will help students reduce the stress that comes

with having so many tasks on their plates. To be productive does not imply participating

in all activities; rather, it means completing work while managing time effectively.

Furthermore, by being productive, students will be able to complete their tasks on time or

ahead of schedule (Lavoie, 2022).

For students, productivity is a crucial aspect of their daily lives. It prevents them

from wasting their time on pointless pursuits. Students can complete their responsibilities

more quickly if they comprehend productivity as a whole and how to manage the right

amount of time, effort, and concentration. However, due to the amount of distractions

that students experienced in their everyday lives, it keeps the students from being

productive. Thus, recognizing the various factors that can influence the students' low

productivity is essentially helpful, as it improves their management, whether it is

academically or just in everyday activities.

The researchers aim to analyze this study, for the reason that the researchers, also

experienced these issues, for instance, procrastinating. Students may feel pressured due to

procrastination, which is one of the reasons they lack productivity. Lack of productivity

among students may cause their workloads to pile up. Hence, analyzing this study will

help the students practice productivity. Productivity is one of the most significant skills

that a student should possess. This can greatly influence the student's future triumphs as

well as different sectors of his life. Therefore, being knowledgeable about the aspects that

might contribute to low productivity can remarkably improve the lifestyle of STEM

students.

The purpose of this study is to know and understand the factors that affects the

productivity of the Grade 11 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

(STEM) students that keeps them from engaging in different productive activities.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research aims to evaluate the factors that affect the productivity of Grade 11

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students at Arellano

University Plaridel Campus during the academic year 2022-2023.

Particularly, this study strives to answer the following questions:

1.) What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1. Age

1.2. Sex

2.) What are the factors affecting the overall productivity of Grade 11 Science,

Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students?

3.) How does the productivity of the student-participants affects their learning

achievement?

Figure 1
Conceptual Paradigm

The conceptual framework shows the Input, Process, and Output (IPO) of this

study. It includes all of the information that is needed for the process and the specific

details to guide the researchers in analyzing the different factors affecting the student’s

productivity. For the first frame, The Input consists of the demographic profile of the

Grade 11 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) student-

participants in Arellano University Plaridel Campus, the factors that affect their overall

productivity as well as the ways in which productivity affects the student-participants’

learning achievement. The second frame, the process contains the instrument utilized, the

design which includes the methodology to conduct the research, and the sampling

technique which selects the individual members of the population that will represent the

characteristics of a larger group of people. The researchers will gather information

through interviews in a descriptive research design to systematically obtain data to

describe the phenomenon discussed in this study. Furthermore, the sampling technique

used is the availability technique, where the researchers sample only accessible members

of the population to participate in this study. In the last frame, Output is the expected

outcome. The researchers aim to be able to analyse the factors affecting the productivity

of Grade 11 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students of

Arellano University Plaridel Campus (A.Y. 2022-2023).

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This study is anchored on Walberg's Psychological Theory of Educational

Productivity (1992). Walberg's theory examines the learning aspects that influence a

student's performance. It is a study of student aptitude in which Walberg used a variety of

methods to discover the factors that influence a student's performance. Being aware of the

variables and elements that influence it, as these are indicators of why a student is not

performing to his or her maximum potential. He studied his theory with the assistance of

many theorists and combined his research with over 3000 studies. It states that the

psychological features of individual students, as well as the psychological contexts in

which they are immersed, influence cognitive, behavioural, and attitudinal learning

outcomes.

Variables are represented in a variety of ways. The first three factors (ability,

motivation, and age) describe characteristics of students. The fourth and fifth variables

(quantity and quality of teaching) reflect instruction, whereas the last four variables

(classroom climate, home environment, peer group, and media exposure) characterize

psychological environment components. He went on to say that these variables have

specific effects that can affect pupil’s performance if they are not properly supervised.

Weighting a certain feature can have a big impact on a student's performance. This theory

was useful for this study since it applies to both the factors driving student productivity

and those influencing student performance.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be highly beneficial to the following persons:

Department of Education, other Education Directors or Teachers

This research is significant to these kind of people as this research will serve as their

guide in enhancing their laws, policies, and programs related among students'

productivity, as well as helping the students through the factors that they're experiencing

that results to productivity.

Parents

This research will be useful to these kind of people as this research will also help

arise their awareness to what factors their children, who are students, experience that may

affect productivity. This research will also help the parents to know what are the needs to

help their children for this research tackles the factors that affect the productivity among

students.

Students

This research is highly beneficial to students as this research will help arise their

awareness to what factors may affect their productivity. This research will also help

students to voice out the factors their currently experiencing that affects their

productivity.

Future Researchers

This research will be helpful to those future researchers, as this research will serve

as a basis or foundation to their study or literature if their research is correlated to factors

affecting productivity among students.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study focuses solely on Grade 11 Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics (STEM) students. Its primary goal is to determine the elements influencing

their overall productivity. This study will be conducted at Arellano University Plaridel

Campus during the second semester of academic year 2022-2023. Fifteen (15)

participants will be coming from Grade 11 Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics (STEM) students only. All the students who participate in this study will be
