I. Problem Solving:

RUBRICS for checking every requirement in the problems:

Points If…

There is evidence of analytic evaluation of the problem with complete details.

The student clearly understands how to solve the problem and gets the correct answer.

2 Related concepts are used to solve the problem but the student arrived at a different answer.

The student wrote nothing or almost nothing or the concepts used are not related to the problem and the
0
student did not get the correct answer.

1. A lawyer commutes daily from his suburban home to his office. The average time for a one-way trip is 30
minutes with a standard deviation of 4.2 minutes. Assume the distribution of duration of commute to be
normal, (a) what is the probability that the trip will take at least ½ hour? (b) If the office opens at 9:00 am
and he leaves his house at 8:45 am daily, what percentage of the time is he late for work? (c) Find the
length of time above which we find the slowest 15% of the trips. (d) Find the probability that 2 of the next
3 trips will take at least ½ hour.
A)
Z = 30 – 24 / 3.8 = 1.58
P(Z<1.58) = 0.9428
P(Z<1.58) = 1 – 0.9428 = 0.0572
B)
Z= 15 – 24/ 3.8 = -2.37
P (Z<-2.37) = 0.0089
P (Z<-2.37) = 1- 0.0089 = 0.9911
Percentage 0.9911 x 100 = 99.11 %
C)
If the given length corresponds to the slowest trips is 15% then 85% corresponds to
the fastest of trips.
P = 0.85
From the standard normal table z = 1.04
15% slowest of the trips (x)
X = 24 + 1.04 x 3.8 = 27.94
Therefore the slowest 15% of the trips will take more than 28 minutes
D)
X = 2 trips
P = 0.0572
N=3
P(2) = ((3!/(3-2)!(2!) x 0.0572^2 x (1-0.0572)^3-2) =0.0093

2. The IQ’s of 120 applicants for an apprenticeship are approximately normally distributed with a mean of 110
and a standard deviation of 11. If the apprenticeship program requires at least an IQ of 100, how many of
these students will be rejected regardless of other qualifications?

3. The finished inside diameter of a piston ring is normally distributed with a mean of 12 cm and a standard
deviation of 0.8 cm. (a) What is the probability that a piston ring will have an inside diameter between 9.72
and 11.12 cm? (b) Below what value of inside diameter will 25% of the piston rings fall?

4. A drug manufacturer claims that their drug cures a certain blood disease 78% of the time. To check the
claim, BFAD used the drug in a clinical trial of 100 individuals inflicted with the disease and decided to
accept the claim if 70 or more are cured. What is the probability that the claim will be accepted when the
cure probability is as low as 0.6?
