Position: Education Construction Engineer

Project/ Summary of Activities

I am tasked with the following responsibilities;

 Supervise and manage sub-contracts (construction) including BOQ, costs,


quality of construction and timeliness for the GPE – MCA Funding
program.
 Prepare tender documents and technical specifications for the GPE – MCA
Funding program.
 Confirm completion of construction works in writing and provide technical
support to the programme management team.
 Develop and maintain good relationships and lines of communication with
relevant local authorities and communities, explaining SC’s role as an NGO
and liaising with them during all phases of the project.
 Through agreed upon survey methodologies and established prioritization
criteria identify suitable locations for the implementation of the
construction activities for the GPE – MCA Funding program.
 Guarantee community involvement at all phases of the project
(identification, design, implementation, and monitoring) to ensure the
development of community ownership for the projects.
 Get initial approval for all plans and final approval from the infrastructure
engineer and the GPE project manager before commencement of project
implementation.
 Implement the GPE funded Accelerated Funding program as planned
according to developed technical standards, schedules and timelines.
 In accordance with project goals and in co-ordination with program staff,
establish Community Working Groups.
 Report any variations or problems with implementation of construction
activities under the GPE – MCA Funding program. Where necessary,
regularly update project implementation plans with associated time lines.
 Ensure full adherence to the SC security plans and protocols
conscientiously respecting the declared ‘go and no-go’ zones ensuring that
staff respects them.
 Supervise the procurement of any materials needed through a competitive
and transparent bidding process following the SC polices design for this
purpose and together with the warehouse manager ensures that they are
safely stored until they are use.

 Provide regular written and verbal reports to the GPE project manager on
infrastructure development activity.

Achievements:
 Carried out technical assessment on 600 targeted schools under ESPIG
supported schools in Jubaland, South West Banadir, Galmudug and
Hirshabelle States. This was successful with the help of the federal member
states director generals.
 Carried out the technical assessment report for all the states and shared with
the Ministry of Education Culture and Higher Education for their approval
 Carried out the standard architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical
drawings for each school needs in each federal state
 Developed bill of quantities for each school

(Each region has 80 new classrooms, 60 classrooms for rehabilitation, 60 twin


latrines with water storage tank, provision of school furniture for the newly
constructed and rehabilitated classrooms, 50 libraries, 50 qur’anic classrooms.)

 Presentation done for the Minister of Education and the director general for
their final approval
 At the moment, we are in the tendering stage for all construction activities.
 Furthermore, I was able to design 3 federal member state office block
development. i.e. Banadir, South West and Galmudug. I had prepared with
architectural, structural mechanical and electrical drawings for three office
block and subsequently prepared their bill of quantities. Then we shared
with the MOECHE for approval and to do the tendering process.

Project/ Summary of Activities

I was tasked with the following responsibilities;

 Organise all activities related to the implementation of water and education


programs including school infrastructure development projects, from tender
to implementation, including logistics and monitoring.
 Responsible for the implementation, monitoring and reporting of all
classroom construction and water supply and sanitation program activities.
 Supervise site supervisors in order to effectively monitor projects.
 Coordinate closely with Local Administration, Community Leaders,
Community Education Committee and other stakeholders to achieve the
construction goals and ensure that communities are mobilized.

 Provide feedback through the Infrastructure manager to the Monitoring and


Evaluation system in order to assess the effectiveness of the projects and
impact and propose recommendations for improvements.
 Implement projects as planned according to developed technical standards,
schedules and timelines. This will include location on site for planned
infrastructure based on community agreement, supervision of all
construction works as regards classroom and water services construction.
 Assist in completing standard Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with
community representatives and local authorities for each community
identified for project activities. Ensure that all elements of MoU are
adhered to.
 Plan for support needs over the course of the programs, and work schedules
(timelines) for the various phases of the programs.
 Assist with development work plans for the implementation of
infrastructure activities in the assigned regions in Somalia.

Achievements:
 Provided technical support to the design and implementation of EAC and
ECHO education programs. I have worked on the designs and BoQs for the
school’s infrastructure programs
 I have greatly contributed to timely preparation of project status reports
required for management, donors, budget review, program analysis and
annual report.
 I participated in the development of SEAM, SERAP and other programs
work plan ensuring its accuracy and timely input into program plans.
 In close coordination with Mercy Corps Wash Specialist, we have come up
with an innovative Berkad designs for WASH interventions funded by
OFDA in Galmudug region of Somalia. Our Unique designs were widely
shared with regional WASH cluster for adoption and convinced the donor
for funding for two consecutives.
 Close collaboration and coordination with logistic staff have resulted in
quick and timely implementation of programs.
 Ensured adherence to quality construction which have won Mercy Corps
praise an admiration from our donors especially GIZ where we have
delivered a health centre, midwifery school in Kismayo and this has
installed confidence to award us another project (construction of Alanley
market) in the same locality.

During this period at Metrix, I undertook the structural design, structural
detailing in conjunction and coordination with a team of draughtsman,
attendance of project meetings, supervision of construction and site inspection
meetings of the following projects:
 Design and supervision of water pans/Earth pans. (Kazole water pan,
Shirango water pan and Midoina water pan in Kilifi County)
 Design of irrigation systems including pipelines and in-field structures
such as receiving chambers, division boxes and canal for Boji farmers.
Irrigation project in Tana River County.
 Supervision of drilling and equipping of Boreholes which also include test
pumping in Kwale and Kilifi Counties. I was also involved in the
rehabilitation of boreholes.

completed my Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Nairobi. I am
currently undertaking masters in Structural Engineering at the University of Nairobi. I am
confident that my various skills will be invaluable Mercy Corps.

I have worked with Metrix Integrated Consultancy in Nairobi – Kenya, Buruuj Construction &
Real Estate and Mercy Corps – Somalia. My duties were preparing structural layouts, carrying
out the structural analysis and design, prepare drawings for the contractor on site and supervision
of the project and preparing Bill of Quantities. I have prerequisite skills in Structural design of
buildings with proficiency in AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, Civil 3D, Masterseries, Revit, Robot
Structural Analysis, Etabs, Excel sheets (for structural analysis) and manual design.

I have been responsible for the design, detailing and site supervision of different type of
structures, of varying complexity and size, as reinforced concrete frames, structural steel,
masonry and timber. I am a self-motivated team player with a high degree of integrity, creativity
and ability to consistently deliver excellent results in a challenging, dynamic and demanding
