Title of lesson: Module 5 lesson 4 day 2 – England and France Develop

Your Name: Lindsey Garber

Length of lesson: 56 minutes

Context of Lesson: World History/ Geography 9th grade. This lesson aligns with
changes in Medieval Society because it was a change from how society used to be
because law was being created. This lesson aligns with what comes after because the
Church continued to weaken due to these reforms and Crusades. This unit talks
about the downfall of the Church institution.

Overview: This is the second half of the England and France Develop lesson because
Thursday was a half day. It goes into detail about how England developed and how
the King began losing power. It connects back to the United States.

Central problem/ Essential question: Why was it so important for the King to
become less powerful?

Objectives: I cannot find the standards that were used for these lessons.

Students will know/be able to:

 Students will know how England and France develop politically and
the resemblance to the United States political development.
 Students will be able to explain the important ideas of lesson 5.3 and
5.4 through the completion of a worksheet.

Anticipated student conceptions or challenges to understanding: Students may find

it hard to understand that many concepts of society and political developments in
the United States were from England and France. Students may find it hard to
understand that the King’s power weakened as well as the Church. Students may
find it challenging to understand that the Magna Carta is one document that limited
the King’s power, but there are also other things that limited the power.

Instructional Sequence:

1. Start lesson by explaining that today they will be continuing the

PowerPoint they had started on Thursday and take out the notes. Explain
that you all will be going into further detail about the political developments
of England and briefly explain some developments of France (1 minute).
Begin lesson by going into detail about common law and how it developed
because of the jury trails they learned the day prior. Explain that jury trials
became popular and since so many people were using them, they developed
political ideals, including common law. Explain what common law is, which
is on the PPT, and then explain how common law forms the basis of what we
have today in the United States (4 minutes).

2. Go to the next slide and explain who King John was and who proceeded
before him. Explain how King John was a poor military leader who lost his
lands to France and his subjects were not very happy about this (2 minutes).
Move to the next slide further explaining King John’s character. Explain how
John was mean, tried to take money from his subjects, and raised taxes.
Explain that since he was trying to finance wars and was losing, their money
was going to waste, and the nobles finally snapped and revolted (2 minutes).
Move to the final slide explaining King John and explain that his subjects
forced him to side a very important document, one that is remember
throughout English history. The Magna Carta is an important document that
limits the Kings power and explain that it guaranteed basic, political rights.
Finish by stating these political rights (3 minutes). Move to the next slide,
further explaining what the Magna Carta did, why it was important, and how
the King MUST follow the rules of it (1 minute).

3. Move to next slide and begin talking about King Edward the first, who
wanted to finance wars, but because there should be no taxation without
representation, he needed to find a way to do it (2 minutes). Move to the next
slide and explain that he created parliament to do this. Read off the slide
explaining what parliament was and how it is a LEGISTLATIVE GROUP!
Also explain how this was another step in limiting the King’s powers (3
minutes). Explain that after this the King would call the knights and
burgesses whenever there was a new tax needed. Explain how it was split off
into the House of Lords (nobles and bishops) and the House of Commons
(commoners) (3 minutes).

4. Move to next slide and explain now we are going to briefly talk about the
French development with Phillip II. Explain who he is on the slide and how
he is the reason there was a political development (2 minutes). Move to next
slide and explain what the Estates-General was and the three different estates
(2 minutes). Conclude slides by saying that they will learn more about this
when they learn about France.

5. For the second part of the hour, students will have time to go into the book
and do assignment on 5.3 and 5.4 (34 minutes). Walk around and ask if they
need help.

Assessment: During the lecture, ask several questions about information they
already know and need to know. Look around and assess students by their facial
expression. Ask students if they need clarification on anything. After the lecture,
walk around and answer questions students may have. Also walk around and look
at the answers on student worksheet. Students will turn in 5.3 and 5.4 worksheet
