Answer any four questions :- [4×5=20]
2. A solid circular shaft is subjected to a bending moment of 3KN.m and a
torque of 10KN.m. The shaft is made of 45C8 steel having ultimate
tensile stress of 700MPa ana an ultimate shear stress of 500 MPa.
Assuming a factor of safety as 6, determine the diameter of the shaft.
[5]

3. (a) State maximum shear stress theory of failure. [2+3]

(b)In a bi-axial stress problem, the stresses in X and Y directions are σ

=200 MPa and σ =100 MPa. What is the maximum principal stress and
maximum shear stress in MPa?

4. A hollow circular shaft is being designed to transmit 120 kW power at

105 rpm.The inside diameter of the shaft is to be one half of the outside
diameter. Assuming that the allowable shear stress is 45 MPa, calculate
the minimum required diameter. [5]

5. Which theories of failure are applicable for shafts ? Why? [2+3]

6. What are the advantages of hollow shaft over solid shaft? Give two examples
where hollow shafts are used. [3+2]

7. State and briefly describe Maximum principal stress theory and distortion
energy theory. [2 +2 ]
