Museum Expansion Project

4349 East Sands Drive
San Jose, California 95032

Dear Mr. Smith:

After looking over the work of what the previous project manager did, I have come to conclusion
that there could be a possibility of rescheduling and crashing the project. Where I could possibly
use a schedule compression technique called fast-tracking. Fast-tracking will allow me to run
multiple activities on the critical path in parallel rather than sequential order. This will allow the
project to reduce the overall project time. I will need to analyze the critical path and those that
aren’t on the critical path to make sure that this technique will work. I will have to make sure that
there are no dependencies within the activities that will overlap with the critical path.
Some assumptions that I will have to make due to gaps in the information left by the previous
project manager include what types of subcontractors they employed for the project, how much
of the budget has already been used, and that all the resources in the project are necessary to
the completion of the project.
With that being said, I would like to say that I was able to come up with a solution with the fast-
tracking technique. I was able to overlap activities 16 and 17, as well as activities 19, 23, and
24. This allows the projects critical path to meet the requirements of keeping the project under
81 days and well as managing to keep all the resources required for the project. Unfortunately,
there comes some trade-offs with the newfound rescheduling of the project. The subcontractors
will have to work more hours as planned to be able to meet the projects needs. With the
authorization of an additional $3 million to the project this will allow the subcontractors to meet
those hours.
Overall, if my first option of action doesn’t work than my contingency plan will have to be the
process of reallocating the resources in the project. In today’s age there can be many other
alternatives to different types of resources. With the extra 3 million in the budget there could be
a good chance to achieve success in the project completion.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the new schedule of the project.

Sincerely yours,
Alexis Holmes
Personal Reflection on Project Scheduling
I have learned quit a bit about myself through this class in general and in my efforts to redevelop
the museum expansion project schedule. I’ve learned that projects aren’t as simple as moving a
couple things around, yet they are very intricate in how they are made just like a puzzle piece.
Each piece is just as important as the other filled with detail and precision. I feel the areas of
project schedule management I excel at is understanding different types of possible solutions to
projects. I am very openminded to new ideas and new ways of understanding. So, allowing
techniques like schedule compressions as well as resource allocating gives me a strong
understanding on how to schedule projects efficiently. I think the biggest growth in knowledge
and skills that I’ve acquired over the last seven weeks would include how to affectively create
structures and diagrams for scheduling projects. I personally was a beginner when it came to
visual templates for scheduling projects. I learned a lot from all the learning materials that were
provided in each module, especially the videos in each learning section. I do still feel I have so
much to learn though. I can especially expand my knowledge on how to create better
documentation for scheduling projects in both word and excel spreadsheets. I feel it takes me
longer than most to create diagrams, so I am looking forward to being able to hone in on those
skills and improve upon them.
I have already started my course of action to be able to ensure that I gain additional experience
in project scheduling. I have guaranteed an internship position with a company called Analysis
Prime this summer. I hope to learn the ins and outs of project management while working
alongside there project manager. There project manager has had amazing experience with not
only financial projects but construction and healthcare projects. I hope to be able to implement
all the tools and techniques I’ve learned throughout this course while acquiring new concepts
throughout my learning experience as an intern.
As I start this internship, I have come across feelings of nervousness considering I have never
worked on a real project. I have only worked on scenario-based projects where if I were to not
create a successful project, I would have no real consequence. Whereas working on real
projects could provide more of a realistic idea of my future, which can be quite nerve-wracking.
Even though I feel very capable of doing a good job to ensure the success of any project, I don’t
want to let anyone down. Especially my project manager mentor.
Overall, I am very thankful for this course which has provided me with so many amazing
concepts. I have learned what I am capable of and what more I can learn. It has given me the
strength to apply for internships and successfully get a position with an amazing company. I
can’t wait to implement these concepts into my future career as a project manager.
