Chapter 1

Background of the Study

Human activities create waste and these wastes are handled, stored, collected and disposed of,
which can pose risks to the environment and to public health (Saxena et al., 2010; Zhu et al.,
2008). Poor management of waste practice causes blocked drains, floods, transmitted infections
via the breeding of vectors, and escalates respiratory issues through floating particles that result
from the burning of waste. According to Olsen et Al that teachers are the primary keys to
develop skills of knowledge in students using education to sustain human life, sustainable
environmental behaviour, and achieve sustainable development.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers that environmental
education comprises more than only information about the environment. It rather enhances
critical thinking, contributing to solving problems, and allowing effective decision-making skills.
The aim of the study was to identify the effects of solid waste management on environment, how
students describe solid waste management. The effects of solid waste management on the
environment may benefit the economy, environment, and health. Students may need to be
proficient in SWM in order to succeed, and this method can teach them how to interact with the
environment. The end effect is a lack of practices among them. Some junior and senior students
are unable to perform SWM

.
Solid waste, effect of improper solid waste disposal, solid waste prohibited activities, school
initiatives towards solid waste, importance of solid waste management and students’
responsibilities. However, students have low knowledge on the different laws relevant to solid
waste management. Television or radio, parents and social media are the sources of these
awareness. The result also shows that students have good solid waste management practices in
terms on segregation, reduction, reuse, recycle and disposal.
Conceptual Framework

Health

Figure 1.

This illustration depicts the effects of solid waste management factors such as segregation and
recycling on the environment and health. The Independent Variable is Solid Waste Management,
while the Dependent Variable is the Factors Affected by SWM.

Theoretical Framework
According to E. Pongrácz, P. S. Phillips & R. L. Keiski (2004) Waste Management is based on
the assumption that waste management is intended to prevent waste from harming human health
and the environment, but current legislation addresses existing waste. New definitions of trash
and waste management are needed to explain why waste is created and provide an intrinsic
solution to the problem. A new technique based on an object-oriented modeling language is used
to define the core ideas of waste management.

Statement of the Problem

The study wants to determine how solid waste management effects the environment and how
students understand it.

1. Demographic Profile
1.1 Name
1.2 Age
1.3 Strand
1.4 Gender
2. How may the respondents describe solid waste management in terms of:
2.1 Segregation
2.2 Recycling

3. How solid waste management affect the following factors?

3.1 Environment
3.2 Health

4. Is there a significant relationship bet awareness and practices on Solid Waste Management
(SWM) and effects on environment?

Hypothesis

Null

Solid waste management affects the environment and health.

Alternative

Solid waste management does not affect the environment and health.

Significance of the Study

The purpose of this study is to determine how solid waste management affects the environment
and how students perceive it

The students

- The direct recipients of the output of this research. Finding out how are they going to describe
and perform solid waste management, and what are their methods and levels of awareness.

The Teachers

- The teachers will benefit much from to this study. Instructors hold the key to helping students
acquire the information and skills they need to preserve human life, sustainable environmental
practices, and sustainable development.

The Environment

- This study will benefit the environment in terms of disaster and health it can manage reduce the
risk in health and disaster.
The school

- This research will benefit the school, because students can manage on how they are gonna do
SWM. It will help the school to segregate and recycle their waste.

The researcher

- The researcher will gain from this study since they will be better equipped to assist and
understand SWM.

The future researcher

- Future researchers will be helped by this study in that it will enable them to do new research
and fill in any remaining gaps regarding solid waste management.

Scope and Delimitation

This advocacy campaign focuses on the on delivering the message on solid waste management
the disaster what will happen if they continue throwing garbage anywhere, the effects of proper
and improper solid waste management. This study will only tackle the segregation and recycling
of solid waste produced by establishment in the school. The school was Sindalan National High
School. That we advocate in Sindalan National High School.

Definition of terms

Solid Waste Management- identifies the entire procedure for gathering, treating, and discarding
solid waste.

Environment- can be summed up as the effects of all the living and non-living things on human
life, which can be one of the factors that solid waste management can have an impact on.

Raising Awareness- technique for attempting to educate and inform the public about solid waste
management

Senior High School- term is used to specify Sindalan High School Students. It is a 2 years
specialized upper secondary education.

Recycling- separating, reclaiming, and utilizing solid waste's potential economic value
components

Segregation- the division of municipal solid waste into the four categories of organic, inorganic,
recyclable, and hazardous wastes.
Chapter 2

Methods and Technique Used

To obtain the information needed for the study, the quantitative descriptive approach will be
employed in this study, thus survey questionnaires are created to assess the students'
understanding of solid waste management in terms of recycling and segregation. Two factors
were identified in this study: the effects of solid waste management on the environment and
developing awareness and behaviors among senior high school students, which will allow
researchers to determine the effects of SWM on the environment.

Locale of the Study

The study will be conducted out in Sindalan National High School in Davsan Sindalan, San
Fernando, Pampanga. The study will be more possible due to the study's location and wide range
of respondents.

Respondents of the Study

Random stratified sampling, a method for selecting samples from a population that can be
divided into subpopulations, will be used to identify the respondents. Because groups of people
within a large population vary, collection each subpopulation separately would be pertinent in
statistical surveys. Sindalan National High School has an approximate enrollment of 324 pupils,
hence, There were 100 respondents. The prorata method is used to identify sample respondents.
The sample of 100 respondents is estimated to reflect 16% in TVL, 25% in ABM, and 59% in
the GAS strand. For that, the projected number of responses in GAS is 59, while ABM will have
29 and TVL will have 16 respectively.

Grade 12 Students Population Sample Percentage

GAS 190 59 59%

ABM 82 29 25%

TVL 52 16 16%

TOTAL 324 100 100%

Instruments of the Study

The survey questions are designed to collect the necessary data for solid waste management and
its effects on the environment, as well as habits and awareness among senior high school
students. Solid waste management will be identified in terms of segregation and recycling, as
well as the effects of solid waste management on health and the environment. In this study,
statistical tools will be used to identify percentages, frequencies, and the mean.

Data Gathering Procedure

Data is obtained through a survey, which will include situational questions attached in Google
Forms that our respondents can answer, making the survey more accessible to both the
researcher and the respondents. A Likert scale will be utilized to learn about the respondents'
perspectives on the study Solid Waste Management and its effect on the environment, as well as
the practices and awareness among senior high school students. The following Likert scale rating
was used to describe:

Number Description

5 Strongly Agree

4 Agree

3 Neutral

2 Disagree

1 Strongly Disagree

Ethical Consideration
The study, titled "Solid Waste Management and its Effect on the Environment: Raising
Awareness and Practices Among Senior High School Students," observed ethical care in
gathering data from respondents prior to the distribution of questionnaires or instruments. The
researchers got a letter of request or permission to conduct the research from the respondents and
teachers.

It was also implying that any information gathered during the course of assessing their responses
would be kept confidential.
