CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION

Nowadays in the adolescence age sexual development and decision-making are critical,

and the use of contraception is essential in promoting reproductive health and preventing

unintended pregnancies.

According to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (February 2023), the teenage

pregnancy rate in the Philippines has been increasing since 2012, with around 530,000 teenage

pregnancies.

recorded in 2021. This highlights the urgent need for effective interventions to address this issue.

Comprehensive sex education programs can play a significant role in reducing teenage.

pregnancies by providing adolescents with accurate and evidence-based information about sexual

health and contraceptive methods.

However, inadequate knowledge and access to effective contraceptive methods can hinder

adolescent usage. To address this issue, a group of grade 11 STEM students in the Philippines

conducted a survey to explore adolescents' perceptions of contraceptives, their knowledge and

access to different methods, and the factors that influence their contraceptive decisions.

The survey aimed to provide insight into why adolescents choose to use contraception or

not, and how their views are influenced by factors such as gender, sexual orientation, cultural

background, and religious beliefs.

The survey's results can help develop effective sex education programs and policies and

support efforts to promote sexual health and prevent unintended pregnancies, particularly in light

of the increasing teenage pregnancy rate in the Philippines.

3
These findings can be used to design programs and strategies that improve young people's

knowledge and access to contraceptives, address gaps in knowledge and access, and eliminate

barriers to accessing these services. Additionally, targeted education campaigns can be

developed based on the grade 11 STEM students' perceptions of contraceptives to promote their

use.

Statement of the Problem

The intent of this research is to investigate the attitudes of Grade 11 STEM students

concerning contraception, especially their awareness and availability to such techniques. The

study's goal is to obtain answers to the following questions:

1. To what extent do the knowledge and access to contraceptives influence the attitudes and

perceptions of Grade 11 STEM students towards their use?

2. What are the barriers or challenges that Grade 11 STEM students encounter in accessing and

using contraceptives, such as social stigma, lack of information, and availability?

3. To what extent do these barriers or challenges affect the perceptions and behaviors of Grade

11 STEM students towards contraceptive use and their sexual health?

4
Significance of the Study

Generally, the apprenticeship of the topic enlightens to cast out the pieces of information of

how contraceptives should be mandatorily used. This study is likely to promote and prevent an

individual from failure. Hence, this topic along with its studies must’ve been productive as it

seeks out safety in any person, especially for:

TO PEOPLE AT A MINOR AGE, People at no right age could make their lives utterly

devastated and eventually grow up choosing to live as it is supposed to be irrelevant to what sort

of life they should have been doing. They might have ended up worse either just because of

reckless decisions ruining their potency for their future. As prevention, we include them as an

excellent instance for promoting contraception’s considerations in usages.

TO THE STUDENTS, not only their future but their dream to work on with their wanted jobs

and proceed to the life they choose serving their lives well, working with other people, and may

contribute knowledge-building ideologies for upgrading the world’s vulnerability.

TO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, being more specific; we specify the innermost

concept of contraceptives to ensure their safety and accommodate their urges for contraceptives

as it is supposed to let them continue proceeding and not to failing in their processes the fact they

undergoing a complex situation showing them up not only civility or courtesy but more of

compromising successions.

5
Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study will investigate what Grade 11 STEM students think and know about

contraceptive methods. We will talk about our opinions and beliefs towards contraception, and

how we understand its advantages. We will also talk about the different ways we can access

contraceptive methods. This study will help us understand why we think the way we do about

contraception, especially in our sexual health.

This study will only involve Grade 11 STEM students from Arellano University, like me.

Only students who have used or are using contraceptive methods will be asked to participate in

the study. We will not be talking about how effective or safe different types of contraceptives

are. Additionally, we will not be discussing how cultural or religious beliefs can affect our views

on contraception. Lastly, the results of this study will only apply to us Grade 11 STEM students

from Arellano University and cannot be generalized to other schools or populations.

Theoretical Framework

According to Golombok and Cook (2020), "How contraceptives affect women’s sexual

well-being is critically understudied" (p. 29). In their research, they found that a more holistic

approach to contraceptive sexual acceptability is needed to capture the full range of women’s

sexual experiences. The study conducted in the center for women's health provides a critical

foundation for exploring the sexual acceptability of contraceptives and their impact on women's

sexual well-being (Golombok & Cook, 2020)

. Therefore, it is important to share knowledge with Grade 11 STEM students about

contraceptives to make them knowledgeable about the use of contraceptives, particularly for

6
those who are not informed about it. Most of the female students are aware, but some are not,

and our goal is to provide information to the latter group.

Conceptual Framework

The researchers conceptualize a paradigm of the study uses the IV-DV as the reference of

the study to identify and classify the “Perceptions of Grade 11 STEM Students towards

Contraceptives: A study on Knowledge and access” 2nd Semester S.Y. 2022-2023

The aim of this study is to investigate the correlation between the availability and

knowledge of contraceptives and the perceptions of Grade 11 STEM students towards them. The

independent variable (IV) in this research is the level of awareness and access to different types

of contraception among students. To determine this, the research will utilize survey questions

that inquire about students' knowledge of various contraceptive methods and their experiences

obtaining them. The dependent variable (DV) in this research is the perceptions of Grade 11

STEM students towards contraceptives. These will be evaluated using a series of Likert scale

questions that will measure the extent to which students agree with statements about the

effectiveness, safety, and social acceptability of various contraceptive techniques. The researcher

will examine the relationship between the IV and DV in this study.
