Facts about the Puerto Rican Parrots

1. Where does it live? In the forest.

2. What does it eat? They eat fruits of the Sierra Palm, Tabonuco and Cupeíllo
trees. They are known to also eat young leaves, seeds, and flowers. In
captivity, the parrots are fed with a mixture of corn, rice, beans, and oats as
well as fruits and vegetables.

3. Behaviors unique to it? They avoid small fruits. These birds are usually seen in
pairs or small groups and frequent the same feeding areas during fairly long
periods.

4. Why did it become endangered? The main reason is habitat loss by

deforestation in conjunction with high rates of mortality and low rates of
reproduction. In addition, hurricanes, hunting, crop protection, natural
enemies, and nest robbing in the early 1900's have contributed to the decline
of the parrot.

5. What is being done now to protect it? The Puerto Rican parrot recovery
program is an effort to conserve, protect and manage wild and captive
parrots to downlist the species from endangered to threatened.
6. How can people help with the conservation effort? Like Dominic in the story,
to take care of the parrot, and take it to El Yunque to the Puerto Rican Parrot
recovery program.
