Activity #5

1. In your opinion, why did Rizal refuse to embrace the conventional type of
Catholicism through consistently attended mass?
 It is based on Rizal's acceptance of logic and his status as a protestant. Although
Rizal was raised in a catholic setting and believes in God, I think that it is his
comprehension and sense of reason that have caused him to reject the
traditional form of Catholicism. He also fought against the Friars and the church
in his works.

2. Don’t you think it was a sort of cowardice on Rizal’s part when he refused to
approve the planned uprising of Katipunan?
 No, he is not interested in taking part in the revolution. According to him, they are
not prepared to battle the colonists. Instead of a revolution, he wants reform.

3. Explain. Rizal had a “bitter-sweet” life in Dapitan.

 The phrase "bitter-sweet" best describes Rizal's life in Dapitan, where he lives in
exile under Captain Carcinero's supervision in imprisonment. They became close
enough to one another that they no longer appear to be receiving harsh
treatment. Despite being exiled, Rizal managed to lead a full life that included
caring for the local flora and fauna, enhancing the way of life and settlement in
Dapitan, creating things, instructing his students, and even winning the lottery.
It's a happy but lonesome moment.

4. There had been several attempts of the Jesuit priest to win back Rizal to
Catholicism, what do you think were their reasons for doing so?
 Due to his writings and exposure of the friars' wrongdoing covered up by religion,
Rizal came to be seen as the enemy of the church. I think the goal of the ongoing
efforts by various jesuit priests to convert Rizal back to Catholicism is to increase
public confidence in the church's innocence in the face of baseless rumors and
made-up accusations against Rizal. When Rizal joined Catholicism while having
attacked it in his books, it was an attempt at retraction that would make the public
trust them.
5. Despite the “serene” life of Rizal in Dapitan, why did he opt to go to Cuba as
volunteer physician?
 He opt to go to Cuba as volunteer physician to Help the Spaniards, whose
misrule of the archipelago he had vividly exposed in his writings, quell the
Cubans' struggle for independence
