Marfa, Joan T. Activity No.

1
NSTP111CW-AL-01

1. Think of other possible activities to demonstrate nationalism in your community?

 One activity that we can do to show nationalism to our community was to use
the power of technology especially the internet and social media. Posting things
related to your community that will help them to be informed on what has been
happening around their surroundings as well as news related to our country in
whereas our opinion is needed to be heard and that the Filipino people should
be informed about, social media would be a huge help on that. Since being
informed and aware on what has been happening in our country is one of the
ways to show our nationalism
 Another way was to be a volunteer in your community, or be part of a program
that will help your peers of fellow people to be informed about our history,
teaching the young minds of children about our country and its rich history is a
great show of nationalism.
 Another activity was to hold a program in which all local businesses can
showcase their own Filipino creations/services that can be appreciated by our
fellow citizens. In todays’ time, most of us were a fan of foreign products in
which we somehow forget that our own country/people can provide that for us.

2. What can you say on the human rights situation in the Philippines? Expand
your answer.
 The situation of the human rights in the Philippines are far from better from its
purpose and execution, yes, there are rights that a certain person can still possess,
however, some people were not able to achieve some of their respectful rights due to
numerous issues associating by those people who are in power that’s been handling the
law. There has always been an unfairness among people, especially those who have the
status, the money and the connection, they’re the most prone type of people of
achieving almost all human rights, compare to a normal Filipino people who have to
even fight and make his/her voice heard in order to be recognized or granted with a
right that he/she wants to achieve, in which in the first place she should deserved. One
example that proves the unfairness of execution of human rights in the Philippines
were the war on drug campaign done by the former president Rodrigo Duterte, the
campaign aims to eliminate or neutralized illegal drug personalities nationwide.
However, numerous extrajudicial executions were committed during this campaign,
especially in the time of pandemic in were many lives has taken but no drug lords were
ever been executed or even jailed. This issue has been widely observed and covered by
the media like Rappler, an online news platform founded by Maria Ressa together with
other fellow Filipino journalists. President Duterte often to get pissed when questioned
by the media on how he handled the war on drugs The government harassed journalists
and media companies, including through politically motivated prosecutions and other
legal action; a court convicted journalist Maria Ressa of cyber libel in June 2020, while
the government shut down the country’ largest television network the following month.
Another example of was the right to security, in whereas in todays’ time, most of our
police officers were the one causing the conflicts instead of protecting the Filipino
people. The Duterte administration prioritize the police officers so much that they think
highly of themselves and that they should be respected at all cost, the case of the police
officer named Jonel Nuezca who shoots both Sonia and Frank Gregorio on their homes in
Paniqui,Tarlac way back in December 2020 just because of a noicemaker “boga”. The
incident was caught on camera igniting the police brutality accidents and human right
violations. One last example was the supposed offense of the former Police Chief Debold
Sinas, who celebrated his birthday in May 2020 in which the world’s strictest coronavirus
lockdown was being implemented. The police chief did not get any charges or offense
because of what he did, instead, even the former President Duterte defended him. These
are just few examples of how has been the human rights situation here in the Philippines,
may this serve an eye opener to the Filipino citizen to really choose the right people that
will serve the Philippines and its Filipino people.

3. Is the provisions of RA 8491 very clear to you? Explain it.

 Republic Act No. 8491, also known as the Philippine Flag and Heraldry Act, stipulates
that respect and reverence should always be shown to flags, national anthems, and other
national symbols that embody national ideals and express principles of sovereignty. It is
said that solidarity. The Philippine flag serves as the identity of our country Philippines,
It has three colors, the color blue which represents peace, red which means patriotism and
valour and the color white which represents hope for equality. The sun and its eight rays
that represents the eight provinces that revolt and fought for independence against the
Spanish ruling. The three stars that shows the three island of the Philippines; Luzon,
Visayas and Mindanao. It’s important to show respect to our national flag as it’s stood
witness to a glorious event in our history, which coincided with the most important event
in the Filipino people's struggle for freedom. And because it symbolizes our ideals and
feelings as a nation, it deserves to be treated with solemnity and dignity.
